Katie Barker and Caleb Haecker were double-winners Thursday for Manchester in its sweep of Three Rivers Conference member Southwood in a dual track meet. The Squires rolled to a 102-20 win, while the Manchester girls won 80-43. Barker won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles for the Lady Squires. Bailey Sewell won the discus, Mikayla Genovese the shot put, and Tahnee Fuentes the 100-meter dash. Rae Bedke won the 1,600, Morgan Farr the 800 and Jaelyn Webb the 3,200 for Manchester. Southwood’s Ellie White won three events; the long jump, the 200 and 400.

Wawasee split its dual track meet with visiting Westview, with the boys dropping a narrow 69-63 decision and the girls winning 97-35. Hannah-Marie Lamle and Elizabeth Zorn won three events each for Wawasee. Lamle won the long jump and both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Zorn won the 800, the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

Over the weekend, Tippecanoe Valley student Hannah Drudge (C) attended the National Field Archery Association Indoor National Archery Competition in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Several area high school sporting events were either cancelled or postponed Wednesday due to the chilly weather. Whitko’s girls softball game against visiting Churubusco was moved to 5 p.m. Friday.

Tippecanoe Valley Middle School’s athletic department presented its winter sports awards Tuesday night. Wrestler Ethan Sprague was named rookie of the year. Andrew Burke was most improved, and the mental attitude award went to Drake Montelongo. Luis Castillo was the Captain’s Award winner, and Tyler Nine was named most valuable wrestler.

Kirk Robinson of Akron was named 2017 Boys Basketball Official of the Year by the IHSAA this week. A veteran of 35 years officiating, Robinson has worked 24 sectional tournaments, 16 regionals, five semistates and three state championship title games in his career.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Little League® International has officially announced Ashlea Nash as the Central Region Assistant Director, joining Central Region Director Nina Johnson-Pitt as the newest full-time member of Little League Baseball and Softball.

AKRON – Cora Alber was a double winner for the Lady Vikings, and Jameson Baker won twice for the Tippecanoe Valley boys in the track and field teams’ outdoor season opener Tuesday.

Today is one of those days where I have about five or six ideas kicking around in my head for what to write about.

Whitko opened its outdoor track seasons with a pair of wins At Southwood in Three Rivers Conference competition Tuesday. The boys won 92-24 and the Lady Wildcats edged the Lady Knights 67-55. The Wildcat boys had four double-winners, and won 13 of 15 events. Senior Garrett Elder won the 100 and the long jump, and junior Shad Ebbinghouse took the 110 and 300 hurdles. Sophomore Zack Freel was the winner in the 400 and the high jump and Gavin Howard was the winner in the discus and shot put.

Kyle Mangas has secured his place in the history of Warsaw Tiger basketball, and now he is ready to take the next step.

MISHAWAKA – Five home runs from Grace College’s baseball team highlighted the Lancers’ 12-2 win at Crossroads League rival Bethel College on Monday.

WINONA LAKE – The Grace College softball team split its first Crossroads League games of the 2017 season Monday against Huntington University.

Last night, the World Baseball Classic semifinal showed us just how silly it is to try and wrap up an extra-inning game in a tidy way so as to not tax pitching arms.

The boys basketball team at Whitko Middle School competed in a tournament at Lakeland Middle School Saturday. After a first-round loss, the Wildcats won the remainder of their games to win the consolation bracket

Wawasee opened its outdoor track seasons Tuesday with a pair of losses at Columbia City. The boys team fell 88-44 and the Lady Warriors lost 77-55. Hannah-Marie Lamle and Elizabeth Zorn were double-winners for the Lady Warriors. Lamle was first in the long jump and 300 hurdles, and Zorn won the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races. Alexis Manges won the discus, Sara Pritchard the shot put and Jada Parzygnot the pole vault for Wawasee.

WINONA LAKE – In the final game of the 2016-17 season, Grace College’s men’s basketball team lost 79-78 to Emmanuel at the NCCAA National Championships.

The Warsaw Lady Tigers competed in the last of the Hoosier State Relays qualifiers at Trine University on Saturday. The 4x200 relay team of Abby Curtis, Makayla Clampitt, Kaia Hummitch, Abby Grayson, Natalia  McGuire and Emma Pena qualified for Saturday’s finals in Bloomington with a time of 1:49.99 and are ranked 15th in the state.

Grace women’s basketball team wrapped up the 2017 NCCAA National Championships with a dramatic 64-63 win over Southwestern Christian on Friday. The win gave the Lady Lancers (17-19) fifth place in the national tournament, the team’s second-best finish in program history and best since 2012. Grace’s 17 wins were also the team’s fourth-most victories for a single season.

WINONA LAKE – In a way, the Grace College Lancers let a berth in the NCCAA men's basketball national finals slip through their hands.

WINONA LAKE – An at-times feisty game went down to the final play on Thursday. Grace College’s women’s basketball team rallied to beat Bluefield College 57-56 in the consolation bracket of the NCCAA National Championships.

When Tom Crean arrived in Bloomington nine seasons ago, hired to restore the Indiana University men’s basketball program to glory, it was understood that it was going to take a while to get there.

Four players from the Times-Union area have been selected for the 2017 McDonald’s Michiana High School All-Star games, to be held at Bethel College on March 28.

The Tippecanoe Valley Athletic Department presented its winter sports awards Wednesday night. Anne Secrest, Meredith Brouyette, Hannah Dunn and Addy Miller were team captains for the girls basketball team. Secrest won awards for best field goal percentage, best free throw percentage, and for the most rebounds, steals and assists. Miller had the highest three-point percentage, Brouyette won the mental attitude award, and Dunn the Booster Club Award.
