Oakwood Cemetery Sexton Updates Board On Parson Farm Area

Posted

Sexton Hal Heagy gave the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents an update Thursday on the Parson Farm area of the cemetery.
He said the street has been put into that area of the cemetery. Workers are doing work to grade the area and get it ready for asphalt. Heagy said city employees are doing the work, which will save money.
After the asphalt work, the ground has to be worked to get everything leveled, among other work, he said.
Heagy said the cemetery has people wanting to have burials in that area, but he did state the Parson Farm won’t be open for burials until sometime next year. He said a lot of people like to be by their loved ones, so he thinks some people have loved ones in the extensions nearby. Heagy couldn’t give a timeframe of when the Parson Farm area would be open next year.
“It’s still a lot of work, but progress is coming,” he said.
In other business, the board heard:
• The fruit and vegetable garden has yielded 813 pounds, most of which was donated to The Salvation Army.
• Cremation Garden #4 has been filled and reseeded.
• Cemetery staff is getting ready for fall, including getting all the hickory tree nuts cleaned up.
• Heard Lincoln Elementary School students will be raking at the cemetery today.
• Beaver Dam Tree Service took down two trees, including a cherry tree that was split they said was dangerous.
