After battling through a myriad of injuries last year, Grace College’s volleyball team is excited to welcome in the 2017 campaign. The Lady Lancers field an experienced roster, led by six seniors who are primed to end their careers on a high note. Grace’s senior class of Kari Feddema, Tori Bontrager, Sara Miller, Naarah Foster, Sierra Smith and Savannah Hart enjoyed a national tournament during their freshman season. They have plans to return to nationals in 2017 and are armed with the big-game experience to back up those dreams. Third-year head coach Katie Van Hofwegen maintained that the senior class was “essential” to the team’s success. “They’ve all had significant roles the past few years. We will look to them for leadership, to set an example for the rest of the team and to invest in the underclassmen. They are wholly invested, and they want to go out on top.”

A swim club has been launched in Warsaw. Warsaw Aquatic Club is an incorporated nonprofit and an authorized USA Swimming Club operating under the Indiana Swimming local swim committee. The club will be run by a board of directors consisting of volunteer swim parents to ensure focus on the development of each swimmer and a competitive team at a high level. The first parents meeting will be held  at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Warsaw Community Pool on the Warsaw Community High School campus. The slate of officers for the board of directors will be voted on, along with additional business items.

SYRACUSE – There’s a lot of “new” surrounding the Wawasee High School football program these days. For starters, Warrior Field has new artificial turf, and the Warriors have a new coach.

The high school football season began unofficially Friday night with scrimmages across Indiana.

There’s something about Friday nights and high school football that seem just so darn American. The air that gets cooler and more crisp as the season rolls along, the marching bands and cheerleaders, and trees changing colors to provide a great backdrop. What’s not to love about it? But make no mistake, Friday nights on the gridiron are disappearing, and sooner than anyone really wants to talk about.   How is this possible? Because it’s getting harder and harder to find men and women who are willing to wear the black and white striped shirts of an official. And it gets worse. It’s not just football refs; there’s a growing shortage of officials in all sports, not just in out little corner of the world, but across the nation.

The Whitko High School football team features plenty of youth. Second-year coach Jeff Sprunger says that’s both good and bad. “Our strength, but also our Achilles’ heel, this year is our youth,” said Sprunger. “We only have two players returning offensively from last year and one on defense. “Our team is full of youth and players eager to fight for positions and challenge each other every day at practice. However, this also is going to lead to a lot of possible growing pains throughout the season.?It will be a fun season to watch Whitko football as this team finds its identity and what we can hang our hat on.”

For the first time in a while, the Manchester Squire football team is returning a core of varsity-experienced players. Many of the players are two-year starters who, as juniors, had a small taste of success with two wins in the Squires last four games in 2016. Among the returnees is Hayes Sturtsman, who completed 48 percent of his passes for 1,335 yards and 11 touchdowns against nine interceptions in the 2016 season.
