Squires Blank Wawasee In Boys Tennis Season OpenerNORTH MANCHESTER – Junior Luke Donathan and freshman Quinn Martin won singles matches in straight sets, helping Manchester to a 5-0 season-opening win over visiting Wawasee in a non-conference boys tennis match Monday.
Donathan downed Wawasee senior Dylan Staley 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Martin beat Warrior sophomore Zach Leedy 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Squire junior Spence Trick beat Graham Perek 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
In doubles play, Logan Parrett and Parker Wagoner beat Jake Cowan and Jacob Krugman 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, and Squire juniors Kyle Shepherd and Kam Lester won in three sets over Brady Robinson and Collin Rhoades, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
“Opening nights are full of nerves and unpredictability,” said Manchester coach Eric Screeton. “This was a great night of tennis for us, in front of one of the biggest crowds at home I have seen for a tennis match in a few years.”
In junior varsity play, Manchester’s Uria Hein beat Clayton Firestone 8-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Grant Strobel beat Wawasee’s Evan Richey 8-1. The Warriors’ Drake Hatfield beat Firestone 9-7 at No. 3 singles.
Wawasee will play at Lakeland in LaGrange on Wednesday. Manchester opens Three Rivers Conference play Thursday when the Squires host Maconaquah.
