Logan Grigsby's 11-strikeout performance led Grace College baseball to its third Crossroads League victory of the 2017 campaign Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers put in one of their best performances of the year against St. Francis, besting the Cougars 12-2. Grigsby got the start for Grace, and he almost went the distance. He tossed seven innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits as he tied his career high with 11 strikeouts. He was backed by a motivated Lancer lineup who put up 12 runs in the ballgame and played error-free defense in the field.

MISHAWAKA – Those that want a shot clock and more scoring in high school basketball games got their wish Tuesday night at Bethel College’s Wiekamp Center.
WATERFORD MILLS – The Wawasee High School baseball season started off with a bang, and Bethany Christian couldn’t stop the onslaught in the Warriors’ 23-2, five-inning win Tuesday.
The boys basketball state finals are now in the rear view mirror.
Warsaw’s girls track team earned a season-opening 71-61 win over visiting Homestead on Tuesday in the first meet held on the new surface at Fisher Field. Abby Curtis was a double-winner for the Lady Tigers, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.61 seconds and the 200 in 26.89 seconds.
The boys and girls track teams at Manchester both won over visiting Central Noble Tuesday. The Squires won a narrow 65-58 decision, while the Lady Squires earned a 76-46 victory. Heath Dierks and Isaiah Davis were double-winners for the Squires. Dierks won the discus and shot put, and Davis took the long jump and high jump. Ethan Davis won the 1,600, Lance Bennett won the 800, and Wilson Nettleton the 3,200. Manchester also won the 4x800 relay.

Zach Hewitt doubled, homered and drove in five runs to lead Whitko to a 17-6, six-inning road win over host and Whitley County rival Churubusco Tuesday night. Zach Morris had two hits, scored a run, drove in three and stole a base for the Wildcats. Drew Bradford had two hits, drove in two and scored twice. Bradford was also the winning pitcher, going four innings and allowing one earned run. He walked a pair and struck out four.
The Whitko Athletic Department recently presented its winter sports awards. Winners were: CHEERLEADING Major Awards – Marisa Baldridge, Rozlyn Bishop, Jonathan Craft, Courtney Krider, Sara Meade, Lauren Riemersma and Abigail Sanger Minor Awards – Dreama Doggendorf, Rylie Gardner and Zoe Goggin

New Indiana University men’s basketball coach Archie Miller did well in his introductory press conference Monday. He said all the right things, and made an effort to win over the naysayers that still want an “Indiana guy.”
Grace’s softball team picked up its second straight sweep on Monday, defeating Bethel 7-3 and 10-1 on the road. The Lady Lancers (13-12, 6-4 Crossroads League) needed a late-game rally in the opener to down the Pilots, and Grace used that momentum to dominate Bethel in the second game. After leading 2-0 through the top of the fifth, Grace suddenly found itself behind. The Pilots (1-18, 1-9 CL) plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, benefitting from two errors by Grace to take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Lancers responded with urgency. Grace pounded out five runs in the sixth inning to run away with the victory.
In doubleheader action on Monday at Bethel, Grace's baseball team was unable to put together all facets of its play. In the opening game, Grace's bats were muted in a 3-2 defeat. In the second game, the Lancers' defense could not keep pace with the team's strong offense in an 11-8 loss. The first game saw the Lancers (10-15-1, 2-6 Crossroads League) produce just three hits. Grace led 1-0 after three innings after Jamar Bray singled and eventually scored in the second inning. The Pilots (12-6, 3-5 CL) countered with two runs in the fourth and a valuable insurance run in the sixth.
Tippecanoe Valley High School senior Alec Craig signed a letter of intent Tuesday to continue his academic and baseball career at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Ill.
Warsaw opened its boys track season Monday with a 76-56 loss at Penn in a non-conference meet. The Tigers had a first-place finish from its 4x100 relay team of Rane Kilburn, Will McGarvey, Alijah Wade and Tristan Larsh, who turned in a time of 43.5 seconds.
Two area softball games were called off due to wet grounds from rain over the weekend.
Manchester, Warsaw competes in indoor meet.
Wawasee scored nine times in the top of the sixth inning to earn an 11-3 win at Westview in the girls softball season-opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
OUTH WHITLEY – Whitko High School senior Suzanne Sickafoose has signed a letter of intent to continue her acamedic and athletic careers at Grace College, where she will run track and cross country for the Lady Lancers.
SOUTH WHITLEY – Led by a strong group of underclassmen, Whitko High School’s varsity softball team beat county rival Churubusco 8-2 Friday evening and improved to 2-0 on the season.
SOUTH WHITLEY – While there were moments of stress, Whitko sophomore pitcher Ellie Snep breezed through five of her seven innings pitched. She finished with a two-hitter in the Lady Wildcats’ season-opening 3-1 win over Lakeland Thursday evening.
