One way to get your weekend off to a great start is to win on Friday night. Manchester did so in dramatic fashion. Ellie Milam scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, sending the Lady Squires to a dramatic 3-2, walk-off win over previously unbeaten Wawasee in a non-conference girls softball game. The game was a see-saw affair that saw Wawasee take a 1-0 lead in the fourth, then the Lady Squires come back to take a 2-1 lead on freshman Mackenzie Day’s home run in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Warriors pushed across a run in the top of t

A seventh-inning rally secured a sweep for Grace’s softball team over Bethel on Friday. After winning the opener 5-1 at Miller Athletic Complex, the Lady Lancers needed a last-gasp surge to defeat the Pilots in the second game. Grace trailed 1-0 for nearly the full game. Entering the team’s final at-bats, Grace quickly loaded the bases after a walk from Morgan Tapscott and singles by Hannah Herbster and Abby Mozingo.

Grace College’s baseball team won game two of Friday’s doubleheader after some extra-inning heroics. They split on the road against conference foe Mount Vernon Nazarene. Game two was tied 6-6 entering the 10th inning with neither team able to take control. Two walks in the top of the inning for Grace set the stage for Mitchell Enyart with two outs. He came through with a single to left field which scored the go-ahead run. Cameron Maxwell had a pinch-hit opportunity following the single, and he seized the moment, hitting his first collegiate home run leading the Lancers (13-22-1, 5-13 Crossroads League) to a 10-6 victory.

Triton took its “Blue Thunder” softball show on the road. The visitors showed they can hit as they racked up 13 safeties, four for extra bases, as the Lady Trojans beat Goshen 9-5 Thursday in a non-conference clash at Shanklin Park. “We had some clutch hits and some big fielding plays,” Triton coach Steve McBride after his team topped an opponent led by a coach he use to face when both were in the old Northern State Conference. “I have a lot of respect for (former Jimtown and current Goshen) coach (Brent) Kulp. His teams never beat themselves. They play the right way."

Mixing his fastball and breaking pitch, Whitko senior Drew Bradford kept Wawasee hitters guessing Tuesday. The right-hander moved to 3-0 overall with a save by tossing a two-hitter and leading the visiting Wildcats to a 3-1 win against the Warriors. Bradford faced 26 batters, struck out 13 and walked one on 110 pitches. “Sometimes it just takes a couple more pitches to get your arm loose,” Bradford said. “I feel I got stronger as the game progressed and that helped us out in the end.” After watching his team improve to 6-0, Whitko coach Erik Hisner praised Bradford.

One play can make all the difference in a baseball game, and that may have been the case in Triton’s 9-3 loss to visiting LaVille in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game Tuesday. When the two teams met Monday at LaVille, Triton scored six times in the top of the sixth to blow open a close game. On Tuesday, LaVille trailed 3-1 with two out in the top of the sixth and Adam Steinke, who led off the frame with a double, still on second base. Freshman Jimmy Fisher then blooped a 3-1 pitch from Triton starter Zac Pitney, and the ball fell between the shortstop, left and centerfielders for an RBI single.
