Lady Tigers Make Quick Work Of S.B. Washington

Lady Tigers Make Quick Work Of S.B. WashingtonTo understate it, Warsaw scored early and often in a 16-3 non-conference softball rout of South Bend Washington Saturday morning.
With two out in the first inning, Lady Tiger senior Abby Glass slammed a 2-2 pitch from Washington pitcher Amani Lee off the top of the scoreboard in straightaway center to get Warsaw started. Glass missed clearing the scoreboard by less than six inches.
Following a walk to Jordan McClone, junior Saylor Bradley cranked another Lady Tiger home run, going to the opposite field in right-center.
The floodgates opened in the second inning for Warsaw, which sent nine batters to the plate in each of its last three half-innings. Four singles, a walk and a double by McClone produced a five-run second frame and staked the Lady Tigers to an 8-0 lead.
Lee answered for the visiting Lady Panthers with a two-out, three run homer in the third inning, but that was the only real trouble for Warsaw starting pitcher Courtney Chookie in the game. The Lady Tiger sophomore allowed five hits in four innings of work, walking one and striking out three in getting the win from the circle.
After Glass doubled in the fourth inning, she scored the last Lady Tiger run of the day on Bradley’s single.
Warsaw head coach Kevin Dishman said it was good to see everyone on the team get into the act, and in to the stat book four games into the season.
“We stroked the ball extremely hard today,” said Dishman. “The best thing about it was we got all our 0-fers out of the way.
“We’re hitting the ball really well right now. The whole team is, top to bottom, which makes it hard to leave anybody on the bench.”
As always, coaches find things to work on, even after an easy win. Dishman isn’t an exception.
“We’re still working on confidence for some of them. It’s important for us to be confident at the plate and make sure we’re swinging at the pitches we want to hit, and get quality at-bats every time up,” he said.
“Defense-wise, we want to be able to move people around and not have any holes, and we were able to do that (Saturday).” Dishman played 12 Lady Tigers Saturday in the five-inning game.
Warsaw (2-2) opens Northern Lakes Conference play today when it hosts Wawasee.
