GREENTOWN – Manchester senior pitcher Hunter Boughman threw all eight innings and picked up the win in the Squires’ 5-3 victory at Eastern in a non-conference baseball game Friday evening. Boughman allowed one earned run and threw just 68 pitches in the game. Hayes Sturtsman had two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs. Grant Strobel had a pair of hits, stole two bases and scored twice. Trey McNall doubled and David McAtee drove in the other run for Manchester. “We had a couple of miscues in the field, but we didn’t let it affect us,” Manchester coach Jack Rupley said. “Hunter pitched an excellent game and our defense made some really nice plays.” The Squires (4-1) will play at Oak Hill in Converse on Monday.
Walpole On ‘Border Wars’ Roster FORT WAYNE – Whitko’s Nate Walpole will play for the Indiana team in the 2017 Nancy Rehm Border Wars boys game April 30. Other on the roster are: Mark Barnfield and Malik Williams of Fort Wayne Snider; Anton Berry, J.J. Foster and Rashaun Walker of Fort Wayne Bishop Luers; Jalyen Butz, Devontae Kinnie and Juan Quarles of Fort Wayne North Side; Jalen Paul of Churubusco; Jacob Redding of Carroll; and Richard Robertson of Fort Wayne Northrop. The game will be on the campus of St. Francis University in Fort Wayne.
Wawasee Falls At Norwell OSSIAN – Making his first-career varsity start, Carter Woody piched three innings of two-hit baseball at perennial power Norwell Friday night. But the Knights pushed three runs across three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Warriors’ seventh-inning effort came up a run short in a 3-2 loss in the non-conference game. Spencer Prescott had two of Wawasee’s four hits, stole two bases and scored a run. Rylan Kuhn singled, walked, and drove in a run. Wawasee fell to 3-3 on the season, and opens Northern Lakes conference play at home against Warsaw on Monday.

Lady Wildcats Walk Off With Softball Victory SOUTH WHITLEY – Whitko rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat visiting Whitley County rival Columbia City 3-2 in a non-conference softball game Friday. The winning rally started when Riley Insley and Anna Ousley both singled. Emalee Duggins then singled to drive in Insley with the tying run, and Ellie Snep’s base hit drove iun Ousley with the game winner. Snep was the winning pitcher, walking two and striking out three. Whitko will hit the road Monday for a non-conference game at Carroll.
Whitko Boys Prevail SOUTH WHITLEY – Gavin Howard, Zack Freel, Collin Bross and Garrett Elder were double winners Thursday as the Whitko boys track team downed visiting Rochester 95-37 in Three Rivers Conference competition. Howard won the shot put and discus, and Elder won the 100 and the long jump. Freel won the 400 and the high jump, and Bross took first in the 800 and 1,600. Other winners for the Wildcats were R.J. Patrick in the pole vault, Shad Ebbinghouse in the 300 hurdles, Alex Wilson in the 200 and Logan Busz in the 3,200. Whitko also got wins in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Next up for Whitko is the Goshen Relays on April 22.
Lady ‘Cats Beat Rochester SOUTH WHITLEY – The Whitko girls track team beat Rochester 71-57 in a Three Rivers Conference meet Thursday. The Lady Wildcats will compete in the Churubusco Relays on April 22.
Whitko Tennis Wins SOUTH WHITLEY – Whitko earned a 5-0 win over visiting Northfield in a Three Rivers Conference girls tennis match Thursday. No. 1 singles player Morgan Keirn, No. 2 Delaney Keirn and No. 3 Jackie Werstler all won in straight sets, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Jenna VanCuren and Manon Sonneville. Jessica and Gracie Hook needed three sets to win at No. 1 doubles. The Lady Wildcat junior varsity won four of five matches. Today the team will play in the Fort Wayne South Side Invitational.
Wawasee Track Falls DUNLAP – Wawasee’s boys track team fell 83.5-48.5 to Plymouth, and 95-37 to host Concord in Northern Lakes Conference action Thursday. Winners for Wawasee were Luke Griner in the 800 and Eric Yankosky in the pole vault. The 4x100 relay team of Cole VanLue, Michael Katzer, Alec Rosbrugh and Yankosky won, as did the 4x800 team of Sam Griner, Spencer Hare, Michael Hammer and Luke Griner. Next up for Wawasee is the South Side Relays in Fort Wayne today.
