SYRACUSE  – Both Wawasee and Whitko came in to Monday’s volleyball match hungry for a win, which helped set up a dramatic comeback and an anticlimactic end to the contest.

With a 4-1 win Monday evening, Concord High School’s varsity tennis team finished the Northern Lakes Conference season undefeated, and in the meantime spoiled the Warsaw Tigers’ senior night.

Grace College’s men’s soccer team was on the verge of upsetting Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday in a neutral-field contest. The Lancers (2-2-3) held a 2-1 lead entering the final minute, but Northwestern kept the match alive with a goal in the 90th minute. The game ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw. “We had the win right there in front of us, and we just didn’t make it happen. It’s as simple as that,” said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. “Two games through double overtime is difficult. But we need to learn how to suffer and how to muscle our way through to win these games. We will see another game that requires us to gut one out, and we will be ready.”

A team that likes to grind it out and dominate the time of possession, the Northridge Raiders showed off some big-play, quick-strike ability Friday night against the Warsaw Tigers.

SOUTH WHITLEY – Even in a matchup of winless football teams, the game can turn out one-sided. Tippecanoe Valley made sure that was the case Friday night, scoring touchdowns the first six times it had the ball and rolling to a 43-7 Three Rivers Conference victory at Whitko’s Ryan Huff Memorial Field.

From the first play to the last, 4A No. 4 NorthWood was dominant in its 32-0 Northern Lakes Conference football win over visiting Wawasee Friday night. On the first play from scrimmage, Brayton Yoder scored from 53 yards out. Yoder finished with 167 yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns. But the NorthWood offense had moments of self-destruction, with four turnovers. Three Landon Gessinger passes were picked off. Still, the Panthers racked up 480 yards of total offense.

Trailing by 15 points after three quarters, it would have been easy for Triton to slip back in to the funk of the last several football seasons. Instead, the Trojans mounted a comeback, forced overtime, held Culver Community scoreless on its possession, then won 27-21 on Ethan Berry’s 10-yard run.

NORTH MANCHESTER – Moving on from last week’s nail-biter of a loss to Peru, the Manchester High School football team hosted Three Rivers Conference and Wabash County rival Northfield for homecoming Friday night.

NORTH MANCHESTER – Led by juniors Emily Peterson and Sophie Bussard, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings beat rival Manchester in three sets Thursday evening.

NorthWood got just what it needed to score a 3-2 Northern Lakes Conference boys tennis win over host Warsaw Thursday.

MISHAWAKA – Over 100 minutes of soccer Thursday couldn’t separate the men’s teams from Grace College and Lawrence Tech University. The Lancers and Blue Devils settled for a 0-0 draw at a neutral-site tournament game, hosted by Bethel College. The teams combined for 31 shots, including 15 on frame.

SOUTH WHITLEY – The Manchester Lady Squires wasted no time scoring Wednesday evening. They then made sure the Whitko Lady Wildcats didn’t score.
