Warsaw senior Kyle Mangas was named to the Indiana All-Star team Sunday night, and will play in a series of exhibition games this summer. Mangas averaged 22.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, leading the Tigers to an 18-10 record. He led Warsaw to its third consecutive undefeated Northern Lakes Conference season and its defense of its Class 4A sectional title, In a regional semifinal game, Mangas scored a career-high 47 points in Warsaw’s double-overtime win over East Chicago Central. Tiger head coach Doug Ogle said the honor validates Mangas’ place in school lore.
The first three innings of the softball game at Triton Monday belonged to Tippecanoe Valley. The next three belonged to the host Lady Trojans. The last two was a matter of who could find a way to score, and Triton scratched a run out in the bottom of the eighth for a 11-10 non-conference win. The Lady Vikings bolted to a 9-0 lead after three innings. Valley took advantage of three walks in the second inning to push across five runs on just three base hits. Mia Gunnels capped the rally with a two-run double to the left field corner. After the third inning, people began to think the game would be a five-inning run-rule affair, but Triton had other ideas. The Lady Trojans got on the board in the fourth on Crystal Brown’s bloop double to left, driving in a pair of runs.

The Whitko girls tennis team opened its season with a 4-1 win at West Noble Monday evening. The Lady Wildcats’ Morgan Keirn beat Megan Godfrey 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Delaney Keirn won over the Lady Chargers’ Kellie Waring 6-1, 6-1. Jackie Werstler downed Kaity VanVorst at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Following a strong week for Grace’s softball team, Ashley Kleinbub was honored as the Crossroads League Player of the Week. Kleinbub batted .429 and had at least one hit in all six of Grace's games last week. She drove in seven RBIs with six runs scored. She was also 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts.
Three Times-Union area players were honored for their play at the Bethel College mens basketball post-season banquet on Sunday. The five team awards are voted on by the team.
Whitko needed 10 innings to claim an 8-7 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader with visiting Bluffton, then won the second game 10-0 in five innings for the sweep Saturday. In the opener the Wildcats trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning of regulation play. Drew Bradford cranked a three-run homer to tie the game. He also had a pair of doubles and was the winning pitcher in the contest. Bluffton scratched across a run in the top of the 10th to retake the lead, but Whitko won the game on Bradford’s infield single. River West scored the tying run, and Bailey Platt scored when the Bluffton third baseman made a bad throw to first.
David McAtee and Jeremiah Airgood had three hits and a run batted in each in Manchester’s 12-8 win over Caston in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. The visiting Comets won the second game 15-13 to gain the split. Hayes Sturtsman had a two-run homer in the first game. Grant Strobel and Kane Gable drove in two runs each. Hunter Boughman was the winning pitcher for the Squires.
The week for Grace's softball team ended on a high note as the Lady Lancers swept Huntington. Grace had balanced production in every area of the game, beating the Foresters 6-4 and 10-2 on the road. With the victories, the Lady Lancers (17-16, 10-8 Crossroads League) move one game out of third place in the league standings. A strong first inning propelled Grace in the opener. The Lady Lancers kicked off the doubleheader with five runs in the first inning.
Six Triton Trojans scored at least two runs, and Max Slusser drove in three runs in Triton’s 16-2, five-inning win at South Bend Riley in a non-conference baseball game Friday. Senior Zac Pitney pitched the first four innings, allowing no runs and striking out five. Dylan Hensley didn’t allow an earned run in his one inning of work in a non-save situation.
The Kosciusko Community YMCA Sharks finished up its winter season at Y State on March 3-5 at Notre Dame. The team had 74 swimmers at the meet and finished third.

One of the things that is universal in sports is complaining about officiating. Anyone in an easy chair with a cold beverage in their hand can whine about it, that’s a part of sports. Nowadays that same person can actually do something about it, and ought not be a part of the landscape. The Electrionic Age is working against quality officiating more now than at any other time in history. So I’m going to write today’s column with a bit of a bile taste in my mouth. Last week in my Facebook feed, I saw Kentucky fans start a website dedicated to preventing John Higgins from calling all Wildcat games. The site makes its case by pointing out the foul differential against Kentucky in games called by Higgins.

Whitko improved to 3-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep at Marion, winning the first game 6-2 and the second 6-3 in non-conference baseball action Saturday. In the opener, Whitko took the lead in the fourth inning when Alex Bechtold and Drew Bradford drove in runs. Zach Morris pitched the first four innings to pick up the win, and Bradford worked the last three frames for the save. Landen Goff had a double in the game, and Bechtold had two hits.
Grace’s track and field team had its second weekend of outdoor competition on Saturday at the Saint Joseph’s Invitational. Four athletes hit the qualifying standard for NCCAA Nationals in the meet, and six Lancers won their respective events. Hannah Treadway picked up three top-two finishes on the day. She was first in the hammer at 131-feet-11, and placed second in the discus (122-7) and javelin (117-6). Thomas Hickerson, who like Treadway qualified for NCCAA Nationals, finished second in his first collegiate meet. He finished second in the javelin with a toss of 148-11.
NORTH MANCHESTER – The softball game between Manchester University and visiting Alma College was rained out. A makeup date is to be announced. The Lady Spartans are scheduled to return to action Saturday when they host Mount St. Joseph
All Times-Union coverage area high school sporting events on Thursday were rained out. Wawasee’s softball game at Elkhart Central, and the home boys and girls track meets with West Noble were cancelled and will not be rescheduled. The girls tennis match at home with Central Noble and the baseball game at Manchester were postponed, with makeup dates to be determined.
Whitko senior Aly Reiff was named to the first team All-State girls basketball team this week by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. She was one of 25 players to make the first team. Others with area connections on the team include Tori Styers of Culver Academies, and Nicole Konieczny and Daly Sullivan of 3A champion South Bend St. Joseph.
For the second-straight night, Wawasee scored more than 20 runs in a non-conference baseball game. In Wednesday’s case, the Warriors plated 11 runs in the fifth inning to wrap up a 22-6 win at Wabash. Wawasee won its first game of the season 23-2 at Bethany Christian Tuesday night.
NORTH MANCHESTER – A single by Noah Beck produced both of Manchester’s runs, and Hayes Sturtsman and his defense made sure the Fort Wayne Wayne Generals didn’t score Wednesday.
Warsaw opened its softball season with a 4-2 win over Mishawaka Wednesday afternoon. Courtney Chookie was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and walking one while going the distance. She also had two hits and drove in a run for the Lady Tigers.
Manchester’s Brooklyn Howard opened the softball season in style, tossing a no-hitter to lead the Lady Squires to a 17-0 win at Central Noble. Howard walked four and struck out nine in her seven innings of work. She also had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice.
The Whitko boys and girls track teams both finished third in the Whitley County meet hosted by the Wildcats Wednesday. Churubusco won the boys competition, and Columbia City the girls meet. Ronald Patrick was the lone boys winner for Whitko, taking first in the pole vault. The Wildcats got second-place finishes from Shad Ebbinghouse in the 110 hurdles, Garrett Elder in the long jump and Alex Wilson in the 100 and 200, Zack Freel in the 200 and in the 4x100 relay.
