Middle school volleyball, football, girls soccer scores

Coach Jon Hoover's message to his Warsaw girls soccer team was simple. It was four words to be exact – “We score. They don't.”

BOURBON – While all five matches finished in straight sets Tuesday, Triton needed and got victory at No. 2 singles to finish off a 3-2 win over Tippecanoe Valley in a non-conference boys tennis match.

This time of year, and again in November and March, we hear the leadership of high school, college and professional sports teams who have not been successful use the catch phrase “change the culture.”

An overtime goal following a penalty kick kept Grace’s women’s soccer team from coming away with the upset over No. 19 Embry-Riddle in Monday’s match. In their last game during their trip to California, the Lancers (2-2-1) looked to put another NAIA top-25 ranked team on upset alert. However, they were unable to build off Saturday’s win against No. 21 Kansas Wesleyan. A foul in the penalty box during the second overtime period opened the opportunity for Embry-Riddle to break the 0-0 tie. Caitlyn Aaron, the Eagles’ goalie, came out of goal and converted on the penalty finding the bottom left corner of the net to win the game for the Eagles (3-1).

Grace' College's women's soccer team pulled off the upset against No. 21 ranked Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday night. Autumn Raulerson's game-winning goal came in the final minutes of a game that seemed destined for overtime. After being substituted into the match just minutes earlier, Raulerson scored an unassisted goal at the 87 minute mark. The match was tightly contested as both teams seemed evenly matched.  The Lancers (2-1-1) narrowly outshot the Coyotes 12-10; both teams had five shots on goal. Grace had the advantage in corner kicks 6-2.

The Warsaw Tigers got off to the start coach Phil Jensen was hoping for Friday night at Fisher Field.

BOURBON – One would think things went well for Triton in its 50-13 home win over Caston Friday night. Trojan football coach Ron Brown, however, was having none of it after the victory.

In terms of offensive statistics, Tippecanoe Valley played North Miami fairly close. But the Vikings turned the ball over four times, including three interceptions, and fell 28-0 to the host Warriors Friday night. North Miami had a 54-yard advantage in total offense, and both teams had 13 first downs, nine by running the ball and four by passing. Valley had a 1:18 edge in time of possession.

SOUTH WHITLEY – After back-to-back losses to their Whitley County counterparts, the Whitko Wildcats were looking to bounce back Friday against Three Rivers Conference opponent Maconaquah.

Josh Shepherd, Delton Moore and Nick Wagner each ran for touchdowns to lead Manchester to a 38-16 win in the Squires’ home opener Friday night. It was Manchester’s first win of the football season. Devon Rooney caught touchdown passes of 26 and seven yards from Hayes Sturtsman in the fourth quarter. Sturtsman also had a pair of two-point conversions, with Rooney and David McAtee adding one conversion each.

MIDDLEBURY – Injuries during the first two weeks of the season have given Wawasee High School’s varsity football team a different look. Quarterback Evan Eshbach is lost for the season – he had surgery Tuesday. Running back Keyan Peele is also banged up, along with others on first-year coach Mike Eshbach’s “M*A*S*H unit.”

SYRACUSE – Lakeland Christian girls soccer coach Nate Raber wasn’t surprised when junior Anna Reimink dribbled through a fatigued Wawasee defense for the game-winning goal, leading the Lady Cougars to a 4-3 victory at Warrior Field Thursday night.
