HAMMOND – Wilma S. Stoeckel Fisher, 89, Warsaw, and formerly of Calumet City, Ill., passed away peacefully Jan. 9, 2015.
She was born in 1925, in Linton. She was married to James Fisher Sr., who preceded her in death.
She moved to Calumet City with her husband in 1951. She worked for many years with the Hammond School Corporation as a special education teacher. She was an active member of Hoover-Schrum PTA, Hoover-Schrum Band Parents, Girl Scouts, Little Calumet Flood Commission and a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ.
She was a surrogate grandmother to over 100 children, and touched each one’s life in a special way. She was loved by many and will be missed by even more.
Surviving are three children: Anna (and spouse Charles) Kruse; Catherine (and Sam Gladstein) Fisher; and James Jr. (and spouse Nancy) Fisher; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two to arrive soon; a son-in-law, Rodd Rasmussen; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Rasmussen, and three brothers: Chester, Bertram and Ronald Stoeckel; and three sisters-in-law: Barbara, Virgina and Betty Ann Stoeckel.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at LaHayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, with Pastor Daniel Binkley and the Rev. Paula Compar officiating. Burial is in Oakland Memory Lanes, Dolton, Ill.
Calling is from 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
