William Conkey Shaver

SARASOTA, Fla. – William Conkey Shaver, 85, of Sarasota, Fla., went home to be with his Lord on Jan. 13, 2012.

He was born June 9, 1926, in Gary. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jane McKown Shaver, who was formerly of Warsaw.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He attended Indiana University and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. As an automobile dealer, he owned and operated a Chevrolet dealership in Gary for 50 years and a Chevrolet-Mitsubishi dealership in Homewood, Ill., for more than 40 years. He was active in the commercial real estate market where he helped develop large commercial sites in both Gary and Merrillville. He served on many community and civic boards in both Gary and Homewood, Ill. He was director of the Heritage Glenwood (Ill.) Bank. In addition to automotive dealerships, he also was owner, operator and distributor for both Mobil and Texaco Oil companies.

He was an honest and successful businessman, a devoted husband and a loving a dedicated father. He will be greatly missed.

Also surviving are four children: John B Shaver, Fort Wayne; Connie Shaver, Sarasota; Cindy Shaver Tilley,  St. Petersburg, Fla.; and William M. Shaver, Marco Island, Fla.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Shaver, Tucson, Ariz.
