Ruth Katharine Lanning, 84, of 1407 Sunset Drive, Winona Lake, died at 11:35 p.m. March 25, 2012, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born Aug. 2, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Edward Joseph and Lillian Batz McGrael. On April 11, 1950, she married Robert “Bob” Lee Lanning, who died in 2004.
She graduated from high school in Mount Lebanon, Pa., in 1945 and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Duke University in 1949. A homemaker, she was a resident of Kosciusko County for the past year and a half, moving to Winona Lake in 2010. For 35 years she resided in Pittsburgh, Pa., 24 years in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Northville, Mich., for eight years.
Surviving are two sons, E.J. Lanning, Lafayette, Calif., and General Stephen (and spouse Candy) Lanning, Colorado Springs; a daughter, Robin (and spouse Jim) Diller, Winona Lake; five grandchildren; and a sister, Claire Johnston, Philadelphia, Pa. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
A private graveside service will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
