TALLMADGE, Ohio – Reene Ann Alley, 80, Tallmadge, Ohio, passed away July 5, 2015. She was born in Indiana, and lived in Tallmadge since 1991. Her education included a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ball State University, Muncie; a master’s degree in math from Purdue University; and finally an Ed.D. from Indiana University in school administration. She was a retired educator, and she taught at the University of Akron and Youngstown State from 1989 to 2002. She started her career as an educator in northern Indiana teaching math, chemistry and physics at the middle and high school levels. After moving to Indianapolis in 1968, she became the first female math department head, junior high assistant principal and then middle school principal in the region. She was a published author and respected expert on McGuffy Readers and antique textbooks. Wherever she lived, she was very active in her community and received numerous awards and honors for both her paid and volunteer work throughout her life. She recently received the Community Service Award from the National Societies of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Akron Chapter, and in 1989, Indiana Governor Evan Bayh awarded her with the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest civilian honor in the state. She loved books, music, gardening, traveling and her family. Survivors are: her daughter, Carijane (and spouse Richard) Kluger, Indianapolis; two sons, Jay (and Julie Godfrey) Alley, Indianapolis, and Steven (and Helaine Levy) Alley of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren: Jacob Rauscher, Max Alley, Jenn (and spouse Nick) Smith, Eric Alley, Patrick and Alexandra Kluger; three great-grandchildren: Lexi and Ryleigh Smith and Noah Rauscher; and a sister, Mary (and spouse Bob) Wagner, Warsaw. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Lynn Alley, and her sister, Jean Lynch. Services will be at 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, Ohio, 85 Heritage Drive, Tallmadge, Ohio. Interment is Monday and will be a private ceremony for the family at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
