Leonard Mervard Claypool

LOGANSPORT – Leonard Mervard Claypool, 97 of Logansport, and formerly of Warsaw, passed away at 1 p.m. Sept. 18, 2011, in Chase Center.

He was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Pennsylvania, to Norman McClode and Nina Rebecca Claypool. On Dec. 1, 1939, in Pennsylvania, he married Ruth Cesna, who died in 1941. On Jan. 28, 1947, in Pennsylvania, he married Leona C. Shearer, who died Feb. 26, 1996.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his country in the New Guinea Campaign in the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre during World War II. He had a very strong work ethic. As a young man, he worked in the limestone mines in Pennsylvania. He later moved to Hebron, where he worked in the Gary steel mills. He then worked for the Porter County Highway Dept., Valparaiso. He retired from the Valparaiso Community School Corp. after working as a custodian for several years.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth (and spouse Nancy) Claypool, Washington, Ill., and Harvey (and spouse Joyce) Claypool, Emerson, Neb.; two daughters, Martha (and spouse Roger) Roeske, Lucerne, and Esther (and spouse Steve) Lawlor, Warsaw; 14 grandchildren: Bruce (and spouse Sue) Claypool; Doug (and spouse Amanda) Claypool; Craig (and spouse Sheila) Claypool; Keith (and spouse Beth) Claypool; Brad Claypool; John (and spouse Heather) Claypool; Tammy (and spouse Justin) Bekish; Mark (and spouse Karla) Roeske; Darrell (and spouse Michelle) Roeske; Kelly, Matthew, Sarah and Bethany Lawlor; and Robyn Roeske; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, two sisters and a brother.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Chapel, Logansport, with Pastor Gary Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with full military rites.

Calling is two hours prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
