COLUMBIA CITY - Harry R. Harris, 72, of Tri Lakes, died March 29, 2008, in his residence.

He was born March 19, 1936, in Salisbury, Pa., to Harry L. and Katherine L. Landis Harris. On April 20, 1957, in California, he married F. Anita Adams, who survives.

After graduating from Meyersdale (Pa.) High School, he moved to Winona Lake and received a bachelor's degree in education from Grace College and a master's degree from St. Francis College. He moved to Little Cedar Lake in 1964. On Jan. 27, 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a Chinese linguist in Formosa for 18 months. He was honorably discharged March 31, 1962. From 1964-94, he taught junior high social studies, 6th grade English and mechanical arts and shop at Thorncreek School. He also coached football, basketball, volleyball and track. He was a member of Tri Lakes Baptist Church and Whitley County and Indiana Retired Teachers associations; and served on the Thorncreek Township Advisory Board for eight years; and sang with the Joyful Sound Gospel Quarter throughout northeast Indiana for 20 years.

Also surviving are three children: Misti Harris, Salinas, Calif.; Susan (and spouse Matthew) Bowen, Charlottesville, Va.; and Matt (and spouse Tracy) Harris, Panama City Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tri Lakes Baptist Church, Columbia City, with Pastor David Schiedel officiating. Burial will be in Stough Cemetery with military honors by members of Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
