Dr. George Kufeldt

ANDERSON - Dr. George Kufeldt, 86, died Aug. 13, 2010.

He was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Chicago, to Henry and Lydia Dorn Kufeldt. On July 24, 1943, in Anderson, he married Kathryn Rider, who died of a stroke July 4, 1956. On June 21, 1957, he married Claudena Eller, who died of cancer Sept. 18, 1978. On Aug. 12, 1980, he married Lydia Borgardt, who died of cancer May 21, 2007.

In 1930, his family moved to Homestead, Fla., where he attended Redland Elementary and High School, graduating in 1941. That fall he went to Anderson College (now Anderson University). He graduated in 1945 with the AB degree, and in 1946 with the ThB degree. After serving as pastor in Homestead, he returned to Anderson in 1950, where he earned the master of divinity degree from the School of Theology of Anderson University in 1950. He received his PhD from Dropsie University, Philadelphia, Pa., in 1974.

He began teaching Old Testament at the School of Theology of Anderson University in September 1961 and retired after 29 years in 1990. He was a member of Park Place Church of God for more than 50 years. He was a life member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, headquartered in Lincoln, Neb. His parents immigrated to the United States as children with their parents, setting in Chicago.

Survivors include two daughters, Anita Shelton, Silver Lake, and Kristina (and spouse James) Schmidt, Fort Wayne; three granddaughters, Karen Schmidt, Lara Otto and Danielle Brock; three grandsons, Douglas Schmidt, Brandon Schmidt and Jesse Shelton; five great-granddaughters, Alexis, Kalissa and Olivia Otto, Ehlana Brock and Lydia Grace Shelton; a great-grandson, Caleb Shelton; two brothers, Dr. Walter (and spouse Doris) Kufeldt, Leesburg, Fla., and Edward (and spouse Kathy) Kufeldt, Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Esther (and spouse Robert) Crnkovich, Anderson, and Marie (and spouse Daniel) Jernigan, Findlay, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Anne Kufeldt, Louisiana, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Benjamin and James, a great-granddaughter, Leah Shelton, and a son-in-law, Jeffrey Wayne Shelton.

Services will be at Park Place Church of God Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Drs. Arlo F. Newell and David Markle officiating. Burial will be at East Maplewood Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

The family wants to thank the staff of Summit Convalescent Center for all their loving care during his last months.
