DeWayne Delbert Salter Sr., 79, died at 7:20 p.m. Sept. 17, 2010, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.

He was born Nov. 7, 1930, in Elida, Ohio, to Grover and Mable Baber Salter. On Oct. 9, 1952, in Huntington, he married Phyllis Joann Foster, who survives.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he entered on July 24, 1950, serving as a mineman seaman during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged June 16, 1954, in Long Beach, Calif. He lived in Pierceton for the past 34 years, coming from Huntington. He owned Lakeline Cabinet Shop, North Webster, retiring in 1986. He was a life member of American Legion Post 253, North Webster, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, Huntington, and a member of 40&8.

Also surviving are a daughter, Debra (and spouse Mitchell) Whiteside, Greer, S.C.; two sons, Steven (and spouse Penny) Salter, Milford, and DeWayne (and spouse Kay) Salter Jr., Huntington; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Maxine Spicer and Joan Gates, both in Huntington. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Salter, who died June 6, 2010, and a sister, Helen Schere, who died in March 1, 1995.

A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Gardens of Memory, Marion, officiated by Pastor C. Ray Miller of Emmanuel Community Church, Fort Wayne, and with military honors by North Webster American Legion Post 253.

No calling is planned.
