Frances Slocum Chapter DAR
The monthly meeting of the Frances Slocum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) took place Tuesday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Activity Room, Wabash. One special DAR guest was welcomed, Anna Johnson from Santa Margarita, Calif.
Devotions centered around the 9-11 memorial given by Mary Jenet Penrod, chaplain. Joyce Joy shared the September president general's message from Ann Turner Dillon.
Continental Congress voted to sponsor the DAR Pathway of the Patriots, a project to plant 250 trees in groves along the Schuylkill River from Bartram’s Garden to Valley Forge. Each tree will be named for a patriot who helped establish the United States.
The national defender report was on the new National Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial that is under construction, with a tentative completion date of May 8, 2020, the 75th anniversary of “Victory in Europe Day.” The Eisenhower legacy will provide evidence and inspiration that the American experiment in democracy works.
The Indian committee minute report was given by Avonne Lee Knecht. Jennifer Rose gave the conservation minute on “Why do we have invasive species?” The American flag minute, shared by Linda Thompson, stated the flag made its first trip around the world on the ship Columbia, leaving Boston on Sept. 30, 1787, and returning Aug. 10, 1790.
Correspondence was a thank-you from the Wabash Historical Museum and a remembrance of former DAR member Marjorie Stoffer
Regent Barbara Amiss reported on the Aug. 7 district meeting. The chapter received a national certificate for outstanding accomplishments in attaining Chapter Achievement Level I for 2017; the Huntington Key Award Achievement 2017-18; and picture of the Stockdale Mill on the 2019 DAR calendar. The chapter’s entry in the national 2018 Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant for $500 was awarded to Gwen Mize, Manchester Jr.-Sr. High School agriculture science and business teacher.
The program was a quiz about unknown things relating to the Constitution.
The next meeting of the Frances Slocum chapter will be Oct. 9 at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Activity Room, Wabash. Prospective members and guests are welcome to attend.

Pierceton Senior Citizens Club
PIERCETON — Real Services will once again be serving lunch at the Pierceton center, seniors learned before the carry-in dinner at the Aug. 20 meeting of the Pierceton Senior Citizens Club.
John offered prayer and members stood for the Pledge of Alllegiance. Carolyn and Jo, who celebrated August birthdays, led members to dinner.
John shared two funnies about hooking up a washer and a mailman fixing a mail box. He also reported on his volunteer work with the Red Cross in Iowa.
The updated agreement with the town of Pierceton and Pierceton Senior Citizens was shared with members. The town will be responsible for cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen, entryway and large room. The Senior Club will clean the small room that is used for cards, games and puzzles.
Selling excess inventory was also discussed; 100 percent of members voted to accept the new agreement.
The meeting adjourned after singing Happy Birthday to Carolyn and Jo.
All seniors in the Pierceton area are invited to the center from 10 to 11:30 a.m. weekdays. Lunch will be served at noon. Call 574-594-5632 to make a reservation. Bring a friend and share conversation, games and a meal with other seniors 55 and better.

Singles Meeting Friends
Nine attended at Wednesday’s meeting of Single Meeting Friends.
Much of the conversation concerned the three tropical storms in the Pacific and the three hurricanes in the Atlantic. Most of the conversation was on Florence, which is battering the east coast, and the tropical storm in the Hawaiian islands.
Donna has been able to visit with her sister more since she is back in the hospital in Indiana. The group’s thoughts and prayers are with her sister and their families.
Catherine has been a bit under the weather, as has Judy, with effects from her fall this summer.
Members were reminded of this weekend’s Apple Festival.
