NORTH MANCHESTER Ð Barbara Ruth Sands, 89, of North Manchester, died at 10:35 p.m. Feb. 28, 2009, in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Shelbyville, Ill., to Roy E. and Flossie A. Rose Runkel. On Sept. 25, 1939, she married Richard O. Sands, who died May 4, 1976.
She was a homemaker, 1937 Chester High School graduate and a member of Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester. She loved to garden and was a collector of rocks and shells. She enjoyed her family and friends.
Surviving are a son, Rick Sands, Bella Vista, Ariz.; three daughters: Linda (and spouse Phil) Frantz, Portland; Sally Welborn, North Manchester; and Sandra Mitting, Wabash; two brothers, Bill (and spouse Jeanne) Runkel and Richard (and spouse Carolyn) Runkel, all of North Manchester; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairview Cemetery, Servia.
Calling is from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
