Tippecanoe Valley High School senior Jeremy Julian has signed a letter of intent to continue his academic and golf careers at Indiana University-South Bend. He plans to major in Business

The Manchester Athletic Department announced this week its summer camp schedule for 2017. Boys soccer camp for students in grades 1-7 will be held May 30-June 2 from 4-5:30 p.m. at Good Field. The camp will be under the direction of Dave McKee, as well as the MHS boys’ soccer players. The cost is $25 per camper, and includes a T-shirt.

The athletic department at Manchester High School presented its winter sports awards Wednesday night. In girls basketball, Bailey Sewell was the Rotary Mental Attitude Award winner, and the Squire Award went to Erika Kendall. Other award winners were: Sydney Day, most rebounds and best free throw percentage; Ellie Milam, sixth player award; Kiera Hatfield, junior varsity scoring award; and Kennidy Lauer, J.V. highest field goal percentage.

Greg Miller announced Wednesday that he is leaving Grace to accept the men’s basketball head coach position at Cincinnati Christian University. Miller has been an assistant on the Lancers’ sidelines since 2014. He will finish up working with Grace through the NCCAA National Championships this week before transitioning to his new job in Cincinnati.

The Wawasee Athletic Department presented its winter sports awards Tuesday night. Trevon Coleman was the most outstanding player on the boys basketball team, and Jairus Boyer was the teamwork award winner. Tyler Smith won the defensive award, Cameron Schlabach the three-point award, and Jacob Hand the rebound award. Cayden Wegener won the free throw and assist awards.

Lakeland Christian Academy presented its winter sports awards this week. Winners were (front row, L-R) Breanna Creekmore, junior high cheer-leadership; Grace Hanes, junior high girls basketball-mental attitude; Genevieve Goldsmith, junior high cheer-positivity; and Angella Stichter, junior high girls basketball-most improved. In the second row are Avery Hobbs, junior high girls basketball-defensive player award; Liza Schmitt, junior high girls basketball-best hustle; Kiersten Parker, junior high girls basketball-offensive player award.

WINONA LAKE – Describing Erik Bowen's performance Wednesday night in the first round of the NCCAA National Championships, Grace College men's basketball coach Jim Kessler probably couldn't have been more accurate.

WINONA LAKE – The NCCAA National Championships started on a sour note Wednesday for Grace College’s women’s basketball team. The sixth-seeded Lady Lancers (15-19) fell 73-53 to third-seeded Emmanuel in the opening round of the national tournament.

Tippecanoe Valley opened its boys and girls track seasons at a six-team indoor meet at Culver Academies Tuesday. No team scores were kept, but both teams had success in the meet. Three Vikings were the only athletes to successfully complete a high jump. Justin Peconga and Keith Wright tied for first with leaps of 5-4, and Dwight Conley cleared 5-2 for third place. Izaiah Brown won the 220-yard dash and Jameson Baker took first in the shot put.

Three Whitko Wildcats, two Manchester Squires and a Tippecanoe Valley Viking were named to the Three Rivers boys basketball all-conference team Tuesday. Senior Nate Walpole, junior River West and sophomore Spencer Sroufe represent the Wildcats on the team. David McAtee and Mason Hamby from Manchester and the Vikings’ Alec Craig round out selections from the Times-Union coverage area.

As the keynote speaker, national champion women’s basketball coach Sue Ramsey spoke on what it takes to be a great teammate at the NCCAA Tournament banquet Tuesday night.

Triton Elementary School’s Wyatt Davis finished in seventh place at the ISWA Folkstyle State Wrestling Finals over the weekend.

Plate discipline is something Erik Hisner carried into the batter’s box with him as a player, and it’s a concept he teaches his hitters as head baseball coach at Whitko High School.

This is the time of year when we almost have been trained by sports to expect the unexpected. Like the Indiana weather, March basketball can be very unpredictable and often sends good teams home and everyone shaking their heads.

For the second-straight week, Warsaw senior Kyle Mangas was named District 1 Player of the Week by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

An impressive week from Grace College softball's Erin Lawhon landed the freshman as the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week. Lawhon went 3-0 from the mound last week, including a gem to upset No. 2 St. Xavier. Lawhon threw a three-hitter over SXU to lead Grace's 6-0 blanking of the 2nd-ranked Cougars.

AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley’s boys and girls track meet at Culver Academies this afternoon will run as scheduled, but moved indoors, according to Viking Athletic Director Duane Burkhart.

Wawasee’s boys and girls track meet at East Noble in Kendallville, scheduled for this afternoon, had been cancelled.

Warsaw’s track teams competed in the Hoosier State Relays qualifier at Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday. For the Tigers, Rane Kilburn improved his time in the 60-meter dash with a  time of 7.38 seconds. In the 60 hurdles, Trevor York finished with a time of 9.46 seconds. The 4x200 relay team of Kilburn, Tristan Larsh, D'Andre Street and Alijah Wade improved their effort  over the previous week with a time of 1:35.48. They are ranked No. 25 in the state.

Grace’s softball team recorded its biggest upset in recent memory with a 6-0 blanking of No. 2 St. Xavier on Saturday. The Lady Lancers recovered from an earlier 9-2 loss to Concordia in the first game of the day, ending the week with a memorable upset of last year’s NAIA national runner-up St. Xavier. Freshman Erin Lawhon pitched a gem to beat the Cougars, tossing a three-hitter. Lawhon walked two, and Grace’s defense did not allow St. Xavier to move a baserunner past second all game long.

Grace’s spring break trip ended in style as the Lancers beat Miami-Hamilton 9-8 in extra innings on Saturday. The Lancers, who went 5-1 at historic Dodgertown this week, won in the 10th inning. Gavin Bussard had the game-winning moment, hitting a walkoff double to secure Grace’s win. The game started scoreless for the first two innings. Hunter Ackerman eventually plated in the third inning off a wild pitch to give Grace a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Xavier Harris gunned down a runner at home to maintain Grace’s 1-0 edge.

MICHIGAN CITY – History nearly repeated itself Saturday. In the end, however, a hot-handed Merrillville team put the Warsaw Tigers' season on ice.
