Homecoming Saturday climaxed for Grace College as the Lancers defeated Taylor 3-2. The Lancers went ahead 3-0 in the second half and held off a late charge from the Trojans. The win moves the Lancers (5-2-4, 2-0-1 Crossroads League) into second place in the league standings, less than a game behind Spring Arbor for the lead. “We had moments of good soccer today, and it’s always important to get a win in conference,” said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. “We had a great atmosphere to play in front of, so thanks to all the fans, alumni and friends for coming out to support us today.” Damon Binkley set the tone for Grace’s offense to start the match. Binkley had three shots in the first three minutes and was set free several times from long passes by Joshua Coupar. Grace was patient in its attack and had control of the ball for the majority of the first half. The Lancers’ speed began to gave Taylor fits, eventually leading to the first goal.

The Three Rivers Conference announced its boys and girls soccer all-conference teams this morning. Among schools in the Times-Union coverage area, Manchester had three players named all-conference: senior Kiera Stacy, and juniors Jirni Cripe and Carsyn Howard. Sophomore Julie Dalsager and sophomore Bailey Mooney were honorable mention.

The Lakeview seventh-grade volleyball team won its tournament Saturday. The Lady Tigers beat Logansport 25-16, 25-21; Churubusco 22-25, 25-16, 15-3 and Woodside 25-21, 25-21.

Lakeland Christian Academy’s volleyball team participated in “Digging For A Cure” with host and opponent Caston Thursday. Proceeds from the match went to support cancer research and to help two Lady Comet players’ moms who are fighting the disease.

Hayes Sturtsman threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns for Manchester in its 28-26 Three Rivers Conference football victory over visiting Rochester Friday night. The Squires trailed 13-0 after the first quarter and 19-14 at intermission. Manchester took the lead in the third quarter and expanded the lead to 28-19 with a touchdown in the final period.

In a battle for second place in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference, Knox rolled to a 35-7 win over visiting Triton Friday night. Max Slusser ran for 61 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans.

WABASH – It would be easy to look at the statistics from Tippecanoe Valley’s 30-29 Three Rivers Conference football loss at Wabash and ask how in the world did that happen?

Northfield scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and four more in the second period en route to a 64-6 Three Rivers Conference win over visiting Whitko Friday night.

SYRACUSE – It would have been easy for Wawasee to pack it in already this football season.

Grace College’s cross country team competed at the Bethel Invitational on Friday. The race, held at St. Patrick’s Park, was filled with familiar opponents including six other schools from the Crossroads League. Friday evening’s meet was highlighted by warm, humid weather on a wide open course. The women had their best race of the year with the top-five runners only 46 seconds apart. Aubrey Breininger, Liz Fox and Suzanne Sickafoose all had personal records, and McCalah Mast and Karla Singer finished with season-best times.

FORT WAYNE – Though playing the Generals, it was the Lady Tigers who were in full command Thursday night.

WATERFORD MILLS – Lakeland Christian Academy never found the groove it was looking for in Thursday’s girls soccer sectional semifinal game with Westview.

The schedules for the 2017-18 Warsaw Community High School Lady Tiger and Tiger Basketball teams have been released. The girls begin their first season under coach Lenny Krebs Nov. 4, with a road trip to Fort Wayne Luers. Their home-opener will be against Manchester on Nov. 8 at the Tiger Den. There is one new opponent on the Lady Tigers’ schedule this season: Defending 4A State Champion Homestead will be in the Tiger Den on Jan. 19. The 40th Lady Tiger Tournament will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, with Perry Meridian, Chesterton and Mishawaka competing for the title.

CULVER – Though the team’s fate had already been decided, Warsaw senior Colton Lind continued to battle.

SYRACUSE – After a winless Northern Lakes Conference season, Wawasee’s boys soccer team beat fellow NLC member NorthWood 2-0 in the 2A Wawasee Sectional semifinals at Warrior Field Wednesday evening.

Warsaw earned a 3-0 boys soccer sectional semifinal win over Huntington North Wednesday. But the gap could have, and according to Tiger coach Frank Courtois it should have been, a greater margin of victory.

Grace’s women’s soccer team narrowly lost a 2-1 game to No. 17 Marian on Wednesday. The Lady Lancers (3-5-3, 0-2 Crossroads League) had more shots than Marian by the count of 14-11, but Grace was unable to pull off the upset of the Knights (9-2, 2-0 CL). All three goals were scored in an eight-minute span late in the first half. Marian struck first in the 31st minute, capitalizing off a defensive error by Grace to go ahead. Grace had an immediate response three minutes later. Autumn Raulerson dribbled past a defender along the right endline. She then placed a perfect pass into the center of the penalty box to Corinne Villalobos, who finished calmly for the equalizer.

Wednesday evening the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation released the following statement regarding the suspension of head football coach Steve Moriarty: “Tippecanoe Valley High School’s head football coach is suspended indefinitely due to an incident that happened in the locker room during the Sept. 29 football game against Rochester High School.
