Letters To The Editor

Editor, Times-Union:If we did a recount on the referendum, we would find that the referendum didn’t cut the mustard. When over 80 percent of eligible voters didn’t vote, apathy won.

- Ethanol Response - Both Sides Bayh - Blind Republican Ethanol Response Editor, Times-Union: This is in response to Brad Clayton's pro-ethanol letter appearing Oct.13 in the Times-Union.He had questions I wish to address, and also wrote of the claims being made by the remonstrators, which at the very least are misleading and at worst, outright falsehoods.I wish to make clear that we are not anti-ethanol, anti-farmer or anti-jobs.We are anti-proposed site. The proposed facility would be literally on the town's border and that's too close.

Editor, Times-Union:How many times are we going to redo CR 250E until we get it right (at the taxpayers expense)?

Editor, Times-Union:I recently visited a breeding kennel in the area. What I saw there sickened me!The back buildings where they keep all the breeders was so hot I could hardly breath.

- Atwood Phone Service - Snow Removal Atwood Phone Service Editor, Times-Union: In response to Mr. Leedy's letter to the editor regarding the Extended Area Service between Atwood and Warsaw, we …

- Ruppel Responds - Soldier Shows Gratitude - Thanks To Library Ruppel Responds Editor, Times-Union: I would like to respond to comments made by those associated with the Warsaw School Corporation, and clarify a few facts. As a State Representative, I have worked hard to ensure that Indiana schools receive adequate funding, even in bad economic times.Warsaw Community Schools will, in fact, receive a 3 percent funding increase next year.

- Redistricting - Honesty - Amtrak - Taste Of Agriculture Redistricting Editor, Times-Union: Every 10 years, following the federal census, the Indiana General Assembly is required to realign legislative districts to account for shifts in population across the state.Proposals were recently unveiled which give Hoosiers their first glimpse of the legislative maps which will dominate the Indiana political scene for the next decade.Like any other piece of legislation, these maps must be approved by the House of Representatives, the Senate, and signed into law by the governor of our state.

Editor, Times-Union:My inquiring mind would like to ask why are so many brand-new Chevys in town?

Editor, Times-Union:We would like to address some issues in regard to Pastor Dan Cox and the pending lawsuit brought against him, by some members of Warsaw United Pentecostal Church.

Editor, Times-Union:Being a Christian for over 25 years, I have had my ups and downs, as all believers do.

Editor, Times-Union:A bunch of kids, all dressed alike, deciding in advance to meet at the same place and dance to music.

Editor, Times-Union:Newer smoke alarm recommendations and technologies now provide greater levels of home fire protection than ever before.

Editor, Times-Union:Anyone besides me wondering why Mr. Betances constantly blames Republicans for the problems our country is facing?

- Red Light Running - Screening Arabs - Expensive 'Vacations' - View From Germany - Gas Sellers Treated Unfairly Red Light Running Editor, Times-Union: In an effort to reduce incidents of red-light running, the U.S.Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration and the American Trauma Society sponsored "National Stop on Red Week" Sept.1 through 7.The theme this year was "Consider the Cost," encouraging legislators, law enforcement agencies and Hoosier citizens to examine the devastating economic and public safety consequences of red-light running.

Editor, Times-Union:After reading the latest rant about the people of South Carolina and their politicians, one would have to conclude that it was written and submitted by a native of the state, or one of their politicians.

Editor, Times-Union: The public intoxication statutes of Indiana have been amended so that it is not a crime to be intoxicated in a public place unless you are doing one or more of four things:

- Leadership Leadership Editor, Times-Union: Lay that Bible down, Mr.President, unless you intend to try to obey the moral precepts and instructions therein.Presently you represent the sad sinful level of morality found in too many of our citizenry.A citizenry which does give you high marks in polls based on material values above character values. An ancient quote is presently very evident, "Material prosperity breeds spiritual poverty." Your leadership in our country takes me back in history to the Roman Empire. When leaders there gave evidence of character corruption, the populace followed, and the empire crumbled. It could happen here.

- Ethanol - Enforce The Borders - U.S.30 Ethanol Editor, Times-Union: A number of ethanol plants have been proposed for northeastern Indiana. There is a significant amount of overlap in the corn supplying areas for these plants and they will be vying for the same corn.It is highly probable that excess corn is grown in the area, but it is not clear how increased demand will change this.Marketing issues are complex and there is no clear answer as to who will gain from the ethanol ventures. We know that the effect of fermenting the carbohydrate (sugar) portion of the corn takes this part of the corn out of the food system. This is the part of corn that provides high fructose corn syrup found in many foods. At this point, we are not certain how energy use will interact with the food uses of corn.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a meeting between the heads-of-state of the two most powerful nations on Earth supposed to be reserved for issues great international import? If I'm right, then why are presidents William Clinton and Boris Yeltsin meeting? I've heard some noise about disposal of plutonium.I've heard that Yeltsin is in need of a shot in the arm and the meeting with Clinton would provide that boost. Be that as it may, but are we really expected to believe all that rot? This meeting is yet another diversionary tactic being engaged in by two "leaders" on the ropes and in danger of going down (sorry Monica) for the count. There is nothing that will come out of the "summit".The name, in regards to this meeting, sticks in my throat.Summits are supposed to reserved for momentous agreements. What momentous agreements can we expect from this one? Easy - none.

- Newspapers In Education - Tribute To No.3 - Dog Struck By Car - Swim Coverage - Madison Parents Say Thanks - Newspapers In Education Editor, Times-Union: To encourage each new generation of readers, schools across America take part each spring in Newspaper In Education Week.NIE Week is sponsored here by the Indiana State Reading Association and by the Hoosier State Press Association, in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Education.

Editor, Times-Union:Of late, the Tea Party has become synonymous with public alarm and deep concern over the reckless and most often absurd solutions heartily endorsed by our so-called "representatives" in Washington.

Editor, Times-Union:I have the privilege of knowing both County Commissioner candidates, Bob Conley and Jon Fussle, I like them both very much, and I consider them both my friend.

Editor, Times-Union:"Touch them, they are real." Or, "Son, what are you hiding in your hands?" "Drugs?" "No, a Playboy." "Oh good." How about, "Let's go argue naked, it will be faster."

Editor, Times-Union: I see the chicken hawks circling again, or is it buzzards?
