Editor, Times-Union:Recently, John McCain has decided that instead of talking about the economy, and the myriad of issues that we as Americans face, he would rather make this campaign about character and not issues.

- Unity Necessary - Toy Drive Success - Readers Day Thanks Unity Necessary Editor, Times-Union: Just when I start to think that all is lost and that the wheels of my friend Gary Gerard's car are slipping irrevocably into a right-wing rut, he surprises me by generating an editorial indicating that he is, at least at times, a free-thinking individual.

Editor, Times-Union:Only one message is given to our leaders when I vote Democrat or Republican. The message is that I am happy with what they are doing. I am happy with taxes going up. I am happy with the ever-increasing list of failed programs. I am happy with government getting bigger and bigger.

- America, Bless God America, Bless God Editor, Times-Union: As a 30-years military veteran, my heart swells with pride and appreciation as I drive around town, seeing much evidence of renewed patriotism including expressions of the prayer, "GOD BLESS AMERICA."That is good! But a thought haunts me.As God looks down at the marquees, windows and bumpers, does he ask, "Why should I? On what basis do you expect me to bless your nation?" I submit that we need a parallel exhortation, "AMERICA, BLESS GOD.

Editor, Times-Union:I suppose that in order to write editorial pieces for this newspaper one does not need to reveal all the facts about a given issue. And I suppose it's OK, in order to make a political point, to divulge the facts through a skewed political prism.

Children count on their parents to protect them. When they can no longer count on their parents for that protection, something is wrong. Marie Noe pleaded guilty to killing her eight children between 1949 and 1968.The 70-year-old Pennsylvania woman will not go to jail. Researchers want to study her instead to learn more about why mothers kill their newborns. In Brooklyn, Ind., Elizabeth Sanders was investigated for the death of her 16-month-old child. She claims her son, Dylan, fell out of his crib, possibly landing on a toy.Doctors say he died of blunt force trauma to the abdomen. For two years, Ronald Shanabarger plotted to father a baby with his wife, let her bond with the baby and then kill the seven-month-old Tyler.Had he not confessed to the suffocation of the child, doctors would have ruled the death Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. OK, I'm guilty. I'm guilty of a crime. The crime of having one too many guilty pleasures. They're not heinous crimes or even illegal, and I'm not the only individual on the planet who has them.Everyone has at least one guilty pleasure (most often, chocolate). It's just, well, do I admit to them or not? Will you respect me tomorrow? For instance, if I tell you that I love a good cartoon, will you think I haven't totally grown up? Batman.Superman.Spiderman.Johnny Quest.Godzilla.And the occasional Charlie Brown cartoon special.I'd rather watch these cartoons than most movies put out lately.Give me Bugs Bunny over Arnold Schwarzenegger anytime. Similarly, comics are a great quick read. The best comics are those with political and social commentary with a twist."Doonesbury" and "The Boondocks" are highly entertaining and each comments on society in ways mainstream news outlets don't, can't and won't.
