Roger G. Rhodes, 78, Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at 1 a.m. July 2, 2014, at Grace Village Health Care, Winona Lake. He was born Sept. 29, 1935, in Rice Lake, Wis., to Carroll and Elaine Orsund Rhodes. On Oct. 26, 1957, in Elkhart, he married Shirley Gang, who survives in Winona Lake. He was a 1954 graduate of Bourbon High School. He was then inducted into the U.S. Army in 1955, served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1962. He worked for 32 years for United Telephone Company, retiring in 1990 as the outside plant manager. After retirement, he worked for Grossnickle Eye Center, Warsaw, in their transportation and maintenance department. He and his wife wintered in Naples, Fla., for a number of years, where he was a member of Marco Lutheran Church, Marco Island, Fla. He also attended Redeemer Lutheran Church and First Presbyterian Church, both in Warsaw. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Randy A. (and spouse Carmel) Rhodes, Warsaw; two daughters, Sheryl L. (and spouse Dale) Conley, Warsaw; Shannon R. (and spouse Neal) Bruns, Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim (and spouse Bonnie) Rhodes, Warsaw; four sisters: Shirley (and spouse Don) Guske, Crown Point; Janet White, Syracuse; Carolyn (and spouse Don) Rarick, and Patricia Nichols, all of Warsaw. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald Rhodes. His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1720 E. Center St., Warsaw, and officiated by Pastor Kevin Koenig. A private graveside service will take place at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with full military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #49 and VFW #1126, both of Warsaw, and the Indiana ARNG Honor Guard. A celebration of life is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Stonehenge Golf Club, 2850 E. Pierceton Road, Winona Lake.
