Pierceton Tomato Festival Set Saturday

Posted
PIERCETON — The 10th annual Heirloom Tomato Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Old Train Depot and Brower Park in Pierceton.

This celebration of sustainable agriculture, eating local and going green is sponsored by the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce.

The event was created to share the experience of seed saving, and for learning the ease of organic processes. Speakers will explain the world of honeybees, growing and grafting fruit trees, beneficial weeds, fermented foods with value, starting one’s own tomato plants and growing one’s own food.

Every year attendees have sampled tomato jam, bread and soup while listening to live music from the terrace, according to a news release from The Old Train Depot. Approximately 100 varieties of tomatoes and vegetables, and a salsa contest are expected at the event.

Local artists are invited to enter the agriculture art contest, and the medium is open.

Vendors will offer art, crafts, information and food. Bakers are invited to enter the green tomato pie contest.

Quentin Flagg will provide a rock show. Also at the event will be various tomato foods, homemade ice cream and a pony ride. The 5K run/2-mile walk starts at 9 a.m.
