AKRON – Guy Jr. Hill, 90, North Manchester, and formerly of Akron and Rochester, died at 5:04 p.m. Sept. 8, 2013, at Peabody Retirement Community after being in failing health for six months. He was born July 16, 1923, in Kosciusko County, to Guy and Faudeline Geiger Hill. On July 27, 1947, at the home of Ralph and Marie Whittenberger, he married their daughter, Helen L. Whittenberger, who survives. He was a graduate of Akron High School. He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army where he was a recipient of five Bronze Stars. He was a grocer at Kroger in Akron, Huntington and Rochester. After that he and his brother purchased Hill's Farmers Market in Peru. Later he bought a store in Akron. After selling the store in Akron, he worked for Lance's New Market of North Manchester, managing the meat market. He retired from Lance’s in 1989. He was a member of the American Legion of Rochester and the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club. He loved playing cards and discussing politics, but most of all he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two daughters: Jane (and spouse Stephen) Henson, Galena, Ohio; and Linda (and spouse Paul) Studebaker, Akron; a son, John E. Hill, Lafayette; a sister, Betty Mahoney, Rochester; two brothers: Bill (and spouse Mary) Hill, Peru; and Dick Hill, Atlanta, Ga.; eight grandchildren: Christopher, Kevin, Tadd, Brian, Bekah, Tim, Jennifer and Julie; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Worl, a great-granddaughter and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hill. Services will at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with the Rev. Sue Babovec and Ted Cox officiating. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery with graveside military rites being preformed by the Fulton County Veteran Honor Guard.
