MENTONE - Eula R. Smith, 79, of 211 E. High St., Mentone, died at 10:10 p.m. Nov. 5, 2010, in Goshen General Hospital, after a three-week serious illness.

She was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Vilas, Owen County, to Samuel and Opal Harrah Smith. On Sept. 2, 1955, in Tippecanoe, she married Chester C. Smith, who died Jan. 19, 1999.

She lived in this area for almost 60 years, coming from Owen County. She was a teacher for many years at Tippecanoe High School and Talma High School and a substitute teacher at Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. She worked in the adult basic education program as well as being a homemaker. She graduated from Freedom High School in 1947, and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1951 and a master's degree in 1955, both of Indiana University. She was a member of Mentone Church of Christ for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday school. More recently she was involved in making hats and caps for cancer patients. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and Mentone American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed genealogy, crocheting, foods and cooking.

Surviving are two daughters, Melva (and spouse Charles) Stamberger, Rochester, and Betty (and spouse Jeff) Roberts, Needville, Texas; a son, James A. (and spouse Jeannie) Smith, Rochester; six grandchildren: Jeremy and Jason Smith; Melinda, Michael and Timothy Stamberger; and Keira Roberts; and a sister, Orma Hanson, Spencer. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ward Smith.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with Billy Steele, Jim Dillinger and T.R. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
