Winona Literary Club Met
WINONA LAKE – The Winona Literary Club met on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. There were 20 members present and one guest. The theme this year is “Life is a Journey, Travel it Well!”
Peggy Owens was the special speaker, an assistant to the chaplain at the Kosciusko County Jail. She gave an engaging and personal testimony about her ministry there over the years, which has included leading worship, teaching in the women's block and facilitating Bible studies for released inmates and their families. Peggy explained that she had been inspired to help after a ministry trip to intercity Philadelphia, Pa. She’s been assisting at the jail since the 1980s. Her winsome personality and kindness were evident to all. She told how chaplain John Boren was a great encouragement during those early years. She also regaled the club with stories of changed lives, compassion, and, of course, times of sorrowful disappointment. Her storytelling was delightful and she gave an example of her “potato parables” that she shared with the ladies in the cell block. Peggy also led singing and music at the jail, which brought great joy. And though she relayed that she was slowing down, she says she is still actively pursuing ways to help incarcerated women in jail and afterward. The club ladies could see that the intangible rewards were worth the effort Peggy had invested. As she wrapped up, she pointed out, “Some of my best friends have been in jail!” The ladies asked questions and then gave her a round of applause.
Afterward, the business meeting was then conducted with the reading of minutes, followed by the treasurer's report, the courtesy report and the membership report.
The next meeting will take place on Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. The featured musician will be violinist Jonah Zimmerman, a junior at Warsaw Community High School and member of the Philharmonic Orchestra. Zimmerman performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. To reserve a spot with the club, either as a guest or as a member, RSVP to Marcia by calling 574-527-7687 and leaving a message by Nov. 1.
The Winona Literary Club has been an ongoing women's club since 1903. It meets biweekly, six times in the fall and six times in the spring. This is not your typical book club; instead, it offers opportunities to enjoy engaging book reviews, listen to performances by talented musicians, and hear talks from local business owners and special speakers, such as government officials or education personnel. A brief club business meeting is conducted afterward, followed by an informal time of friendly chatting and refreshments. All women of the community are welcome to join them. They now have a Facebook page. Check them out at Winona Literary Club - Est. 1903.
