Continuously serving Kosciusko County since 1854
Each Altrusa International biennium a new theme is chosen by the newly elected international president. The international president for the current biennium is Chris Devlieger from Dekalb, Ill. She chose the theme Love- Literacy-Legacy.
She states that “Love comes from serving others. Literacy has been Altrusa’s international focus since 2001 and Legacy means leaving a lasting impact.”
Altrusa Warsaw embraces Love- Literacy- Legacy by giving of volunteer hours and monetary donations to local organizations.
Most recently, Altrusa presented a $500 donation to Operation Read. Operation Read encourages reading and promotes literacy by ensuring books are provided to children within Kosciusko County.
Four hundred to 500 books are distributed each month during the school year. Books are delivered to every elementary school in Kosciusko County, Warsaw Early Headstart and Headstart. Also, books are distributed to organizations such as Making Healthy Families, Combined Community Services, the Salvation Army and the Beaman Home.
Altrusa members volunteer monthly at Operation Read in the North Webster Elementary School. Members label, sort and pack the books for distribution. Each child receiving a book knows the book was chosen especially for them as their name appears on the front cover label.
In addition, Altrusa members continue to promote literacy by reading to children at Warsaw Early Head Start, Lincoln School Adopted Class and by maintaining two Little Libraries.
To learn more about Altrusa and volunteer opportunities join them Oct. 1 at noon at First United Methodist Church, Warsaw.
