Winona Literary Club Met
WINONA LAKE – Winona Literary Club met on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake.
There were 17 members present and one guest. David Haney was the featured musician. He is a local composer and self-taught pianist. Haney played many original compositions on his keyboard. He is well-known at the Kroger store on Center Street in Warsaw and plays for the community on weekend evenings near the café inside.
Following the performance, Esther Eickhoff gave a book review on "The Network - Battle for the Airwaves" by Scott Woolley. It is a true story, told in a narrative style, about how wireless communication was born and evolved in America. Eickhoff said it is mainly the story of David Sarnoff, a Russian immigrant who rose to power, becoming the president of RCA and the founder of NBC in the mid-20th century. His story is integrated through his relationship and rivalry with Edwin Armstrong, an inventor and technical genius. Eickhoff shared with the group how this story weaves together technology, business, legal battles, politics and personalities. The interesting review transfixed the ladies. They asked several questions and then happily thanked the reviewer.
The business meeting was then conducted with the reading of minutes, followed by the treasurer's report, the courtesy report, the membership report, which included three new members, and old business.
The next meeting will take place Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. The special speaker will be Peggy Owens, a retired employee of CE National and an assistant chaplain at the Kosciusko County Jail. She will be speaking about her ministry, which has included helping with worship music, teaching in the women's block and facilitating Bible studies for released inmates and their families.
To reserve a spot with the club either as a guest or to join as a member, RSVP to Marcia by calling 574-527-7687 and leaving a message by Oct. 18.
The Winona Literary Club has been an ongoing women's club since 1903. It meets bi-weekly, six times in the fall and six times in the spring. This is not your typical "book club;" instead, it offers opportunities to enjoy engaging book reviews, listen to performances by musicians and hear talks from local business owners and speakers, such as government officials or education personnel. A brief club business meeting is conducted afterward, followed by an informal time of friendly chatting and refreshments.
All women of the community are welcome to join them.
