The 2017 Major League Baseball season will go down as one where a team’s hierarchy had to decide for themselves if their teams were really contenders capable of making an October run.

When Warsaw announced plans to install an artificial turf playing surface on the football field last spring, it was met with mixed reviews.

The Giants, sponsored by Banner Medical, won the Senior Minor division tournament this summer in the Warsaw Little League.

The Cardinals, sponsored by Louis–Dreyfus, won the Little League Major division tournament championship this season in the Warsaw Little League.

The White Sox, sponsored by Clearwater Car Wash, won the Little League Minor division tournament this season in the Warsaw Little League.

Pitcher Drew Bradford, a 2017 graduate of Whitko High School, signed a letter of intent Monday to continue his academic and baseball careers at Indiana Wesleyan University.

The Attack, a Warsaw-based team, won the 9U division of the BPA Super State baseball tournament over the weekend at the CCAC.

Several Times-Union area softball players earned all-state honors for the 2017 season from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. Wawasee senior and Huntington University signee Meghan Fretz was named to the Class 4A/3A third team and played for the North squad in the ICGSA All-Star game on Saturday. Wawasee coach Mike Barger served as an assistant on the North team. Joining Fretz on the All-Star team was soon-to-be Lady Forester teammate and  Whitko senior Kennedy Krull. The Lady Wildcat was named to the Class 1A/2A second team.

 Sliding into third base, smashing a double into the gap, leaping for a ground ball … that was what Danny Maringer looked at in regards to sports for a good share of his life.

The Warsaw Little League is in the midst of its season-ending tournament, which started Monday.

Grace College’s Chad Briscoe was recognized for his outstanding work this week when he was announced as the Crossroads League Athletic Director of the Year. Briscoe, who also won the award in 2010, served Grace, the Crossroads League and the NAIA on a number of levels this year. “I am deeply honored to receive this award. I greatly appreciate and enjoy the friendships among the ADs in the Crossroads League,” Briscoe said. “I share this honor with the administration from Grace College and the incredible group of professionals that I get to work with every day.” Briscoe served as the chair of the league’s athletic directors and fulfilled part of the league commissioner responsibilities while the national search for a new commissioner commenced.

Andy Lewis has been named an assistant coach for Grace’s men’s tennis team starting in the 2017 season. Lewis, who will assist head coach Larry Schuh, is a Grace graduate and a standout Lancer. He was a two-time NAIA national qualifier with the Lancers and won multiple conference awards. He played at Grace from 1985-89, earning All-Conference accolades each year. In his final two years, he won three district crowns in singles and doubles to advance to the NAIA National Championships.

Whitko High School senior pitcher Drew Bradford has been named an Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association North-South  All-Star. Bradford is the second Wildcat  to be named to the squad, joining outfielder Zach Snep in 2015.
