Warsaw Boys Beat Northridge In Regular Season Finale; Lady Cougars Win; Lady Warriors Fall; Plymouth Edges Wawasee In Finale

Warsaw and Columbia City advanced to the finals of the Warsaw boys tennis sectional with 5-0 wins Thursday. The host Tigers beat Tippecanoe Valley and the Eagles downed Whitko.

Grace College’s women’s tennis team had no problem with Indiana Tech on Thursday, winning 8-1. Thursday’s match was the final home regular season contest at Miller Field for the Lady Lancers (9-4). Grace sits one win away from recording double-digit victories, which has only been accomplished three other times in program history. Grace swept all three doubles’ points, including a win by default at No. 3 doubles. Emily Mast and Carrie Copeland at No. 1 doubles as well as Jenna Jackson and Molly Fitzpatrick at No. 2 doubles both blanked their opponents 8-0.

Perhaps getting an emotional boost from the return of coach Rick Orban, Warsaw opened its quest for a sixth straight boys tennis sectional title with a 5-0 win over rival Wawasee Wednesday at the Warsaw courts.

WINONA LAKE – Grace College’s volleyball team grabbed sole possession of third place in the Crossroads League with a 3-1 win over Spring Arbor Wednesday.

NORTH MANCHESTER – The five seniors on Manchester High School’s varsity boys soccer team were recognized after Monday’s Three Rivers Conference game with Maconaquah.

HOWELL, Mich. – The Grace College women’s golf team won its second tournament of the fall at the Cleary Invitational on Monday. The Lady Lancers fired a 327 as a team and had the top-three individual finishers at Chemung Hills Golf Club.

The IHSAA announced pairings for the 51st annual boys tennis state tournament, which begins with sectional play Wednesday. In the Warsaw Sectional, the host Tigers will play Wawasee in the first round. with the winner taking on Tippecanoe Valley in the semifinals Thursday. The other semifinal will have Whitko taking on Columbia City. The championship match is scheduled for Friday

The IHSAA announced sectional pairings for boys and girls soccer Sunday evening. Championship games in all sectionals are scheduled for Oct. 7, with regionals played Oct. 14.

Grace College's women's tennis phenom Emily Mast earned her fourth and fifth Player of the Week awards on Monday. Mast was named both the Crossroads League and the NCCAA National Player of the Week for the Lady Lancers. Mst improved to 11-0 on the season in singles' play, winning three more matches at No. 1 singles for the Lady Lancers.

Warsaw’s Bailey Buhrt and Spencer Britton finished second at No. 1 doubles in the Northern Lake Conference boys tennis tournament finals Saturday in Plymouth. The Tiger duo fell 6-3, 6-3 to NorthWood’s Brant Mast and Jared Hoffman in the title match. Colton Lind was third at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-3 over Wes Troyer of NorthWood. Kyler Bartol was sixth at No. 2 singles after dropping a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 decision to NorthWood’s Ben Vincent. Caleb Williams was sixth at No. 3 singles after falling 6-3, 6-0 to Plymouth’s Andy Rolston.

Ulisses Miranda scored in the 108th minute to lift Grace’s men’s soccer team to a win over Ohio Christian. Miranda’s goal was the only tally of the match, helping the Lancers (3-2-3) end the nonleague schedule on a high note. Kurt Hamlin was stellar in goal for Grace, making six saves. He made one of the most important plays of the game in the second half, saving a penalty kick in the 71st minute to preserve the 0-0 scoreline. The Trailblazers (1-6) looked strong to start Saturday’s match. OCU had an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half, including four shots on goal.

Senior Day inspired Grace College’s men’s team on Saturday at Miller Athletic Complex. The Lancers stunned second-place Marian 5-4, sending ripples through the Crossroads League standings. Before Saturday’s match, Grace honored its graduating class of Danila Kurkulin, Uros Pajic and Adam Yoder. The seniors went on to play a pivotal role in Grace’s win.
