Going by the numbers, Warsaw girls basketball was very similar in both of head coach Lenny Krebs’ first two seasons. The Lady Tigers went 15-9 overall, 5-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference and lost in the second round of sectional play in both 2017-18 and 2018-19. But each team is different. Each has their own personality.

Fourth-seeded Manchester University gave the top-seeded Panthers of Hanover College a battle, but ultimately fell just short, dropping a 2-0 decision in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals on Wednesday November 6.

Normally, defending conference champions don’t make a lot of changes. But with a new coach and the graduation of key players, the Manchester girls basketball team is making adjustments in preparation for the 2019-20 season.

Mike Howard looks for his young Whitko Wildcats to play an energetic brand of basketball in 2019-20. It’ll be needed since the school will not put a junior varsity team on the floor and there are 11 players on the varsity roster — seniors Haley Howard and Jadin Parrett, sophomores Reese Bradford, Kylie Fugett and Elizabeth Miller and freshmen Brooklynn Coburn, Zoey Gaff, Morgan Howard, Kirsten Schipper, Nadia Rhoades and Maggie Wolfe.

The Crossroads League placed 18 student-athletes on the 2019 CoSIDA Men’s and Women’s Academic All-District Soccer Teams on Thursday. Six of the CL’s 10 institutions collected at least one award, with Taylor accounting for eight, Spring Arbor taking five, Grace claiming two and Mount Vernon Nazarene, Saint Francis and Indiana Wesleyan all claiming one.

Motivation coach and writer David Joseph Schwartz wrote “Believe it can be done. When you believe something can be done, really believe, your mind will find the ways to do it. Believing a solution paves the way to solution.” Schwartz wrote a book in 1959 called The Magic of Thinking Big”, and his main point is that when you believe that what you are charged to do is possible, it’s the first step to doing that thing.

Coming off a season with the school’s fewest wins since the 2009-10 season, Triton’s girls basketball season has a lot of experience returning, and will be looking to be more sure of themselves in the season starting this week. Last year’s six-win season was played by many who were tasting varsity basketball for the first time, and head coach Adam Heckaman plans to put that gained experience to good use starting tonight.

Junior Juan Jaramillo rushed for 183 yards on 35 carries and scored three touchdowns Friday night in Warsaw’s Class 6A Sectional 2 victory at Chesterton.

In the words of 10th-year head coach Chris Kindig, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings are going to be “less predictable” this season, Valley has featured the Times-Union Area Player of the year the last six seasons - Anne Secrest four times, followed by Sophie Bussard twice. Secrest became the program’s all-time leading scorer and accepted an NCAA Divison I scholarship to Youngstown State University before transferring to Indiana Wesleyan.

Grace College and Director of Athletics Chad Briscoe welcomed student-athletes from the high schools of the Northern Lakes Conference for a Sportsmanship Summit on Monday. Student-athletes from the NLC schools attended the summit, which was designed to educate student-athletes about sportsmanship and character training in athletics.

Warsaw junior Jacob Kissling completed his cross country season with an 84th-place finish at the IHSAA State Finals in Terre Haute Saturday.

The Manchester University men's and women’s cross country teams captured the 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country titles on Sunday at the LaVern Gibson National Course.

For the third time in four years the Tigers opened football sectional play with a victory. Juan Jaramillo scampered 32-yards for his third touchdown of the evening for the game-winner with 3:14 remaining in the game to lead Warsaw to a 35-28 first round Class 6A Sectional victory over host Chesterton Friday.

In the three previous sectional meetings, the Jimtown Jimmies outscored Tippecanoe Valley 160-25. With a chance to move on to the sectional championship, head football coach Steve Moriarity and his Vikings players wanted to erase those memories with a victory.

Grace College’s men’s basketball team started the season in style with a 77-66 win over Lincoln Christian on Friday. The Lancers (1-0) won the first game of Scott Moore’s head coaching career at Grace, taking over from retired NAIA Hall of Famer Jim Kessler.

Grace College’s volleyball team was unable to pick up a late-season road win on Wednesday, falling at Taylor 3-1. The Lady Lancers (15-16, 9-7 Crossroads League) won the opening set, but they were unable to maintain that momentum against the Trojans (19-15, 8-8 CL).

For the first time in 42 years, someone new will be leading Grace’s men’s basketball team. Scott Moore will handle his first game as head coach of the Lancers on Friday, taking the reins from retired NAIA Hall of Famer Jim Kessler. Moore was grateful for the lessons learned under Kessler’s tutelage and looked forward to imprinting his own style at the helm of the program. “Learning how to lead is a lifelong process. I’ve been coaching people for a long time, and that’s what this is,” Moore said. “You’re teaching basketball but ultimately coaching people. Coach [Kessler] taught us that you have to love your players first. The foundation of this program isn’t changing from that.”
