Jaramillo’s 3 TDs Leads Tigers To Sectional VictoryCHESTERTON – For the third time in four years the Tigers opened football sectional play with a victory.

Juan Jaramillo scampered 32-yards for his third touchdown of the evening for the game-winner with 3:14 remaining in the game to lead Warsaw to a 35-28 first round Class 6A Sectional victory over host Chesterton Friday.

The Trojans did not go softly into the night, trailing by a touchdown with time ticking away late in the fourth quarter. After’s Warsaw’s Zach DeFord sacked Chesterton sophomore quarterback Chris Mullen on third down, the host team faced 4th and at the Tiger 21-yard line, the Trojans attempted to convert with a toss over the middle. Senior defensive end Parker Davenport finally got to Mullen after chasing him throughout the evening, disrupting Mullen’s throw while Caden Silveus deflected the pass intended for Jacob Warren, a 6-foot-6 senior who is ten inches taller than Silveus, to seal the fate of Trojans.

“I’m proud of these guys. Now we get to play another good team next week and compete for a sectional title,” head coach Bart Curtis said, referring to Friday’s sectional title matchup between Warsaw (8-2) and Penn (6-4).

“Everything matters. The defense was feeling the pressure all night. They stopped Chesterton on the first drive. I told them in the second half that if they could stop one drive, we could win this game. They stopped them on two drives.”

The Trojans vaunted passing attack was stifled in the first four plays of the game. Sophomore Chris Mullen was sacked by Jayton Brock and DeFord. That was the only drive that was stopped in the first half for either team as they headed to the locker room tied at 21.

Following a Chesterton 17-yard punt the Tigers took control of the ball at the Trojan 40-yard line and chewed up 3:01 capped off by Wyatt Amiss’s QB option run off the right tackle for pay dirt. Harrison Mevis kicked his first extra point of the night for a 7-0 lead.

The Trojans took over at their own 20 from another Mevis touchback with two straight running plays before Mullen drove the Trojans down the field, completing 3 of 3 passes for 62 yards including a 13-yard strike to his go-to receiver, senior Ben Slatcoff to tie the score.

Chesterton’s out-of-bounds kickoff gave the Tigers good field position at their own 35-yard line. The Tiger offense took the field with 2:06 left in the first quarter and burned an additional three seconds to get back in front 14-7 with Jaramillo’s first of three touchdowns for the night at 11:57 in the second quarter.

The Trojans wasted no time taking advantage of the speed and size of Warren. It took them 26 seconds for Mullen to find Warren straight-up on a go route down the right sideline for a 74-yard touchdown to tie the score at 14..

The Tiger offense returned to the field at their own 35-yard line after another Chesterton out-of-bounds kickoff. The Tigers drove 65 plays on 14 plays capped by Jaramillo’s 5-yard touchdown run to re-take the lead.

The Trojans responded on the following series with an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive with Mullen completing 5 of 7 passes for 63 yards including a 3-yard touchdown on a fade to Warren to tie the score at 21 with 50.5 seconds remaining.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Tigers offense wore out the Trojan defense with 8:40 time of possession in the third quarter. The Tigers broke the 21-21 tie with a Wyatt Amiss one-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

Jaramillo was the workhorse in the backfield, leading all rushers with 180 yards on 34 carries. His effort was aided by Kyle Miller’s dominant play on the offensive line, as well as the other Wild Hogs (the moniker for the offensive line) Brock Hueber, Angel Mendez, Austin Meads, Jake Desenberg and Griffin Reed. Amiss and Blake Marsh each rushed for 44 yards, and Keagan Larsh added 21 yards in 4 carries. Amiss had two TD runs, and he was 2-2 for 30 yards passing as the Tigers amassed 322 yards of total offense.

The Tigers will look to avenge last year’s 16-7 sectional-opening loss to the Penn Kingsmen Friday at Fisher Field. Kickoff time was undetermined at press time.
