Senior Haley Clifford entered Friday night’s competition with one motto on her mind: “Be fast, be tough, and be aggressive.” That formula served her well, as she finished in fourth place in the 120 pounds weight class for Manchester in the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling state finals. The victory over her first-round opponent, highlighted by a first period pin, guaranteed her a spot in the winner’s bracket, and subsequently, a top four finish.
Grace’s track and field team continued its indoor season with the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday. The Lancers set two school records and had an NAIA “A” qualifier in the indoor meet.
Grace’s women’s basketball team notched a crucial road win on Saturday, defeating Mt. Vernon Nazarene 74-72. Kyannah Stull paced the offense with 24 points, including four 3-pointers.
Grace’s first game this season as a ranked team was a barnburner.
As the temperatures and snow fell outside Friday night, Warsaw’s varsity boys basketball team heated up inside the Tiger Den. In a 49-39 Northern Lakes Conference win over the Goshen RedHawks, Warsaw went from shooting 44 percent in the first half to making 59 percent of its attempts in the second half, improving to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. To the contrary, the RedHawks shot 44 percent from the field in the first half, but just 31 percent over the final two quarters, as they fell to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the NLC standings.

In a fast-paced game that remained close until the end, the Wawasee Warriors boys basketball team fell to Elkhart Memorial 59-51 in Northern Lakes Conference action Friday night. The Warriors got off to a hot start, hitting their first three shots from the field en route to a 6-2 lead. After an Elkhart Memorial flurry from midrange, though, they ended up facing a 16-6 deficit. Wawasee hit the final two baskets of the period, and the score stood at 16-10 heading into the second quarter.
Warsaw Community High School alum and Spring Arbor University senior Paul Marandet has been named to the Top 100 Watch List for the 2019-20 Bevo Francis Award presented to the top player in Small College Basketball, awarded by SmallCollege-Basketball.com. The Spartans trailed 10-1 four minutes into the game before outscoring the Yellow Jackets 53-30 the rest of the way en route to a 54-40 victory.
