The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from Jan. 20-26. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.

After a crushing loss on Thursday to Rochester, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings basketball team looked to rebound and return to their winning ways. Facing a Southwood team that is coming in with a three-game win streak, it did not look like it was going to be easy. At first, it was not.

Third-year Warsaw girls basketball coach Lenny Krebs described Brielle Harrison as a matchup nightmare Saturday night. The 5-foot-11 senior was certainly that, particularly in the second half, as she and classmate Kaylee Patton led the Lady Tigers to a 51-37 win over visiting Northern Lakes Conference opponent Concord on Senior Night.

Even with all its turnovers, and even without its top senior player, Triton threatened to emerge as girls basketball champion of the Bi-County Tournament for the first time ever Saturday night. Bremen survived the scare, though, and repeated as titlist with a 31-22 victory over the Trojans at LaVille High School’s Dale Cox Gymnasium. “I couldn’t be prouder,” Triton coach Adam Heckaman said afterwards of his players. “They fought and fought and fought. We just came up a couple possessions short.”

Jacob Linky found himself behind 3-1 in the second period then 5-4 at the beginning of the third in the finals of Northern Lakes Conference wrestling meet Saturday.

Grace College’s men’s basketball team added another ranked upset to its portfolio on Saturday. The Lancers impressed in a 98-83 victory over No. 8 Marian at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center, leading for nearly the entire game. Charlie Warner scored a season-high 28 points in an efficient performance. He shot 10-of-14 from the floor, 4-of-6 on 3-pointers and 4-of-4 on free throws.

Concord played visiting Warsaw even on the scoreboard in the second half Friday in a Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball contest. The Tigers (10-3, 3-1) built a large lead and wound up putting the Minutemen (1-10, 0-4) away, 56-36.

Robert Murphy was an accomplished runner in high school and college at distances from 800 to 10,000 meters. He now races much longer and is also good at that. How good? By clocking a chip/net time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, 58 seconds Sunday,  at the Houston Marathon (26.2 miles), Warsaw’s Murphy qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials Feb. 29 in Atlanta.

Triton finished with more turnovers than points. It didn’t matter, because the persevering Trojans also finished with more points than Glenn. Charging back from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit, Triton advanced to just its second-ever Bi-County Tournament girls basketball title game with a chilling 31-29 victory over the Falcons in Thursday’s second semifinal at LaVille’s Dale Cox Gym.

Grace College will celebrate its most recent national champion on Saturday. Grace’s women’s golf team, the 2019 NCCAA national champions, will be honored during halftime of the men’s basketball game on Saturday.

Warsaw Community High School’s bowling team recently completed its season. The boys team won the Wabacanoe Conference champions, and the Lady Tigers were the conference runner-up. Brooklyn Slone was the sectional runner-up in singles, finished sixth at the Crawfordsville Regional and will compete in the South Bend Semistate Saturday. Hunter Jackson also advanced to the regional.

Three days ago, the nation observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the 35th time. This annual remembrance of the civil rights leader and his remarkable efforts in the 1950s and 1960s to combat racism in the United States continues as one of the most significant days on the calendar every year.

It was hard to imagine much topping the lopsided nature of the Triton girls’ 17-4 first-half against LaVille. The LaVille boys, though, topped it in the very next game, and in fact stuffed an even more lopsided count into half as much time.

Wawasee defeated Whitko 58-12 Tuesday night, resulting in the largest margin of victory for the Warrior girls basketball team this season. Led by sophomore Emily Haines, Wawasee found their shooting touch early. Haines, responsible for a career-high 19 points on the night, helped her teammates end a five-game slide by holding Whitko to just six points per half.

We need to have people in our lives who are brutally honest with us. Someone who is not afraid to tell us the truth, knowing full-well that what they tell us will make us mad—at least for a while. For some of you, today, that person is me.

Two Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association proposals were approved by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Two proposals were rejected. One was tabled. Several rules and points of emphasis were discussed.

The year 2020 is really heating up, and last week provided several statistical outbursts throughout the state, as three of four Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Players of the Week  surpassed 40 points in a game, one winner grabbed more than 20 rebounds in a game, and another winner shot 82% (14-17) from 3-point range. Even some of the other top nominees put up huge numbers, including one player pouring in 51 points in a game.
