Barbara J. Manahan, Winona Lake, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 13, 2017, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, at the age of 75. She was born Oct. 24, 1941, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Henry and Wilna Fleming Campbell. She was married on July 18, 1964, and shared 52 wonderful years with Ronald E. Manahan, who survives in Winona Lake.
James M. “Jim” Hile, 77, Warsaw, passed away Jan. 12, 2017, at his home. He was born Jan. 7, 1940, in Warsaw, to Robert H. and Mabel N. Moran Hile. He was a lifetime Warsaw area resident and graduated in 1959 from Warsaw High School. He was a truck driver for various local companies most of his life. He is survived by a brother, Robert (spouse Linda) Hile, Warsaw; and a stepsister, Janet Shepherd, Warsaw. He was preceded by his parents. No public services will be held. SYRACUSE — Jeannette L. Cripe Lee, 90, Goshen, formerly of Syracuse, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Jan. 14, 2017, at Courtyard Healthcare Center, Goshen. She was born Dec. 29, 1926, in Syracuse, to Gideon Olen and Chloie Hoover LeCount. On July 1, 1943, she married Ray Cripe, who died Sept. 23, 1980. Sherman Coy Jr., 96, Warsaw, passed away shortly before 9 a.m. Jan. 13, 2017, in his home. He was born Jan. 4, 1921, in Syracuse, to Sherman Sr. and Hazel L. Goble Coy. On July 9, 1972, in Sullivan, he married Katheryn Yates; they were married 44 years. He was a 1939 graduate of Goshen High School. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1944, serving overseas in May 1945; he was involved in World War II South Pacific Theatre. He joined five-star General Douglas MacArthur in June 1945, working with 18 members under him as guards for General MacArthur through Nov. 15, 1947. He was honorably discharged through Great Lake Naval Training Center on Dec. 3, 1947. He was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. He worked in tool and die at GTI for nearly 25 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW 1126 and American Legion Menzie Reece Post 258 in Pierceton for 63 years. He enjoyed anything outdoors, including gardening, camping and fishing. He loved his family. Survivors include his wife, Katheryn Yates Coy, Warsaw; two daughters, Sandra England, Winona Lake, and Mildred Burchett, Peru; a son, Carl Coy Sr., Winona Lake; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Coy; two brothers, Carl and Eugene Coy; a sister, Marquerite Kitson; and a niece, Phyllis Kitson. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 Sheridan St., Warsaw. Otto Burchett passed away on Jan. 12, 2017, in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing at 81 years old. He was born on Feb. 26, 1935, in Prestonsburg, Ky. He was raised by his mother, Alta Miller, and eventually moved to Ohio before settling in Warsaw in his early twenties. He had been self-employed as a carpenter and real estate investor, flipping houses and performing remodeling. For many years, he had been a member of the Warsaw Moose Lodge and the VFW. He was an entrepreneur who was driven to work hard and who loved making money, no matter how small the amount. He was a caring father who loved spending time with his three daughters and his family. He loved joking with people and could be very ornery. He especially loved joking with his good friend, John “Redbone” Hughes. Those left with memories to treasure include his three daughters: Dianna Burchett, Linda Burchett-Leeper and Barbara (spouse Tim) Rohr, all of Warsaw; nine grandchildren: Jill Kerby, Warsaw; Sherry Gatke, Warsaw; Misty Osborne, Minnesota; Michael Krise, Florida; Ashley (spouse Patrick) Richardson, Fort Wayne; Amanda (spouse Mark) Poling, Warsaw; Zachary Dustin, Warsaw; Morgan Rohr, Warsaw; and Taylor Rohr, Warsaw; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Waddle and Lola Vires, both of Warsaw. He is also survived by his best buddy, Little-Bit, the dog. Those who preceded him in passing include his mother, Alta (née Miller) Waddle; a grandson, Ashton Rohr, March 2001; and the love of his life, Alice Rhoads, November 2014. Wayne Marvin Nicola, Warsaw, passed away at 11:40 a.m. Jan. 15, 2017, at Parkview Regional Medical Center of Fort Wayne at the age of 79. He was born July 31, 1937, in Eastport, Mich., to Wilburt Nicola and Marian Batterbee Nicola. On June 21, 1958, he was married to Erma Haught, who survives in Warsaw.
BOURBON — Barbara Holle, 82, rural Etna Green, passed away Jan. 6, 2017, at home in the care of Great Lakes Hospice and her family. She was born Aug. 29, 1934, the daughter of Fred and Irene Oakley Freeman, at Kokomo. She was a resident of the area all of her life. She was a homemaker and had worked at various trailer factories and at Jomac Products, Warsaw. She was a member of the Jr. ONO of Etna Green and a graduate of North Webster High School. In her spare time she was an avid gardener, but most of all a stay-at-home mom where she could care for her children. She married John “Jack” Holle on Aug. 28, 1953; he preceded in death Oct. 9, 2004. She leaves behind her caring family: daughters, Debbie (spouse Michael) Romine, Campobello, S.C., and Tina Tomlinson, Warsaw; and sons, Brett Holle and John J. (spouse Kathy) Holle, both of Arlington, Texas. She also was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Lana Payton, Holly Kiel, Scott Warren, Michael Warren, Bryon Warren, Zachary Holle, Staci Holle, Jacob Holle, Amy Holle and Derrick Stephenson; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Judy Owen, Albion, Ind.; and her brother, Jim Freeman, Albion, Mich. The family would also like to recognize her very special friends and neighbors, the Dave Leiter family. She was preceded by her parents; her husband; a sister, Mary Stouder, Jan. 1, 2017; two half sisters; and a half brother, Alvin Freeman. Phillip L. Harden, 81, joined with his Lord and Savior on Jan. 11, 2017. He was surrounded by his family at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home. He was born Jan. 26, 1935, in South Bend, and graduated from Silver Lake School and Tri-State University. He was united in marriage with Velma Juday on Aug. 15, 1954. They were married 62 years. He worked at Bowmar Instrument Corp. for 15 years; founded and ran V H Electronics, Harden Industries and Harden Electric; and ran a large family farming operation before retiring. He was a member of Zanesville United Methodist Church since 1973. He loved his family, fishing, farming and retreats in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Velma, Roanoke; a sister, Doris (spouse Milton) Bloom, Warsaw; a daughter, Sheryl (spouse Rick) Lee, Roanoke; sons, Jim (spouse Terri) Harden, Roanoke, and Ken (spouse Nancy) Harden, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren: Matt Wymer, Indianapolis; Lisa Wymer, Fort Wayne; Andy Harden, Georgia; Zane Harden, Roanoke; Glenn Harden, Zanesville; and Galen Harden, Virginia; and great-grandchildren, Gabe, Malakhi and Evelyn, Georgia. He was preceded by his parents, Phillip and Jennie Harden; and sister, Jackie Kerlin. Margaret Ann Orr, 69, won her battle with dementia; she passed away peacefully at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 11, 2017, at home. On March 10, 1947, she was born in Fort Wayne to William and Ilah Huffman Hamilton. She grew up in Warsaw, graduating from Warsaw High School in 1965. On Aug. 26, 1972, she married Michael Orr. They have two children, Thomas (spouse Theresa) Orr and Erin Sampson (fiancé Justin Perry). She worked at R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., Edgewood Middle School and Warsaw Community Public Library. She is survived by her husband; two children; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Rosemary Thompson and Peggy O’Brien. She was preceded by her parents and her brother, Bill Hamilton. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.
