Letters To The Editor

Editor, Times-Union:Life is a glorious opportunity, if it is used to condition us for eternity. If we fail in this, though we succeed in everything else, life will have been a failure.

Editor, Times-Union:I am responding to the letter Dennis Lundgren wrote on April 25.

Editor, Times-Union:Of all the callous insults and outrages the morally bankrupt Bush administration has visited upon this nation,

Editor's Note: This letter was written in reference to a young man in prison the letter writer came to know. The man recently was released.

Editor, Times-Union:Congratulations to the city of South Bend for passing an expanded smoke-free air ordinance during its Common Council meeting on Tuesday night.

Disabilities Editor, Times-Union: People with disabilities in Indiana and their families face a quiet crisis. Funding to provide critical services is disappearing as state and federal officials look to reduce spending. Yet most of us have no idea that the people most at risk - people with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities - are paying painfully for the cuts. In last Monday's edition of the Times-Union, you ran a story on the back page of the front section that detailed how changes in Medicaid contracts has resulted in people with severe disabilities losing benefits that allow staff to be with them all or part of a day. It told the story of a young man in Bloomington with cerebral palsy losing many hours of his staff support. It is an all too familiar story, and it's not just happening in Bloomington but here in Kosciusko County as well. There are vulnerable people with severe disabilities, unable to respond on their own to a crisis (fire, injury) or personal need (toileting, hunger). Leaving them alone threatens their safety and well-being.  We at Cardinal Services and the families we serve see reduced Medicaid contracts daily. These and cuts to programs like transportation, day programs and work services have us struggling to find ways to keep each person safe, happy and well-served. We need our community to know that the cuts are affecting people with disabilities. Furthermore, we need members of our community to learn more by going to www.INQuietCrisis.org to find out what's happening in the state and how they can help. Thank you, N. Jane Wear CEO, Cardinal Services via e-mail Editor, Times-Union: People with disabilities in Indiana and their families face a quiet crisis.

Editor, Times-Union:I enjoy reading Mr. Gerard's News Views in the Saturday Times-Union. In his latest article he wrote, "I am not a global warming denier." Certainly the so-called "news media" in America today is running wild with the theory that mankind is going to make the planet uninhabitable.

Editor, Times-Union:We made some gains with the election, but the fight has not been won yet. We still have a White House to take back. Glad to see Pelosi gone but can't believe old Harry gets to stay.Obama still does not get it. During his talk-and-answer deal on Wednesday a reporter asked him if he felt the Demos' losses were due to the economy being the way it is or if it was due to his policies. He actually says it was due to the economy. LOL. When he does leave office he will make a killing with his stand-up comedy routine.Another thing that caught my ear was how he was pleading for everybody to work together to get the economy back on track. Kind of late to be asking for a little understanding now isn't it when for the last two years with the Democrats in control everything was shoved down America's throat. Easy case in point, the Obama healthcare plan. So, yes, we are on the right track to getting the good old USA going the right way again. Like I said, the fight's not over yet. We still have the White house to take back. One good thing out of all this, the spending money like a sailor on a drunk Friday night will come to a stop. So we may not be bankrupt by the time you leave office, which can't get here soon enough. It was a good day for us and a damn good day for America. You all have a nice day.Lonnie SloneWarsaw, via e-mail

Editor, Times-Union:Each of us has known mayoral candidate Dr. Joe Thallemer for nearly 40 years.

- Condemned - Loved 'Seussical' - Bible Laws Condemned Editor, Times-Union: I'm writing this letter in reply to the personal attack launched againt me by Jonathan Mauk in which he - not God - has condemned me to hell for speaking my mind in an open forum. And to dispute you, Mr.Mauk - I do have moral standards those which include allowing others their opinion without condemning them to hell. In fact my letter was written with an open spirit, asking others as yourself that are so judgemental to give gays the same opportunities to marriage as straights do.

Editor, Times-Union:Eternity knows no time.

Editor, Times-Union:How many have filled out and mailed your "American Community Survey"?

Editor, Times-Union:I have to appreciate you Mrs. Bell, for condemning a person who would dismiss a person's argument because of a person's socio-economic status.

- Bible Context - Endicott Investigation - Miffed At School Board - Labor Day Telethon - Love Your Enemies - Prejudice - Coulter Column - Lazy Managing Editor Bible Context Editor, Times-Union: In a reply to a previous letter to you, I was accused of taking the Bible out of context.I dispute such an assertion, but if I did so, perhaps Mr.Wickens could further elucidate. That gentleman stated that no writer to you had quoted Leviticus 20:13, which paraphrased loosely imposes a death penalty among those who engage in homosexual behavior.I did read such a letter in this column about a month ago.

Elected officials are often faced with weighing the delicate balance between public and private interest, ensuring the former is protected, while not unduly infringing on the latter. By and large, our elected officials manage the task successfully and above reproach. At times, however, what should be a clear line of demarcation becomes a bit blurred. In an ideal world, governmental bodies would have ample tax dollars available to provide for the necessary services needed in our communities - police and fire protection, well-maintained roads and streets, efficient and environmentally-safe sanitary sewers - as well as providing some of the desired but less "needed" elements of civic life, such as parks or various and sundry "restoration" projects that directly benefit a small and select few. Ideal worlds seldom, if ever, exist. And the world, while good, is certainly not ideal in the town of Winona Lake these days.

Editor, Times-Union:Disturbing things regarding Kyle Babcock:

Editor, Times-Union:During recent reading in a book on John Wesley's life, I came to some child-training information which Susannah Wesley, his mother, used in the rearing of her 10 children who lived; out of 19 she bore, nine died.
