Posted
WINONA LAKE – The Winona Lake Fire Department will be getting a new roof.
The town council Tuesday unanimously approved repairing the roof at the fire department building.
Fire Chief Mitch Titus said the roof has been leaking and the repair has been needed for awhile.
The repair is expected to cost $23,800.
In other business:
• Bruce Shaffner was re-elected as council president for the year. Rick Swaim will serve as vice president.
• The council approved modifications to the town’s zoning ordinance.
The new rules include a limit of four unrelated persons in a family dwelling, down from the previous total of six.
The ordinance also bans canvas-covered structures from being used as garages, storage sheds, boat shelters and carports.
In addition, wood-burning boilers are banned from garages and sheds, and clotheslines will not be allowed in front yards.
• Street Superintendent Tom Miller suggested the council look into banning plastic bags for leaf and brush pick-up. He said the plastic isn’t bio-degradable.
Swaim expressed some concern about the accessibility of paper bags.
The council approved for the town attorney to begin drafting an ordinance.
Miller said they could work out the logistics and details later, as they have a few months before the summer starts.
• The council approved to hire Laurie Renier as a part–time clerk to take over for Karen Cripe, who resigned.
Renier will be paid $280 a week for about 20 hours of work.
• The council renewed the town’s engineer contract.
The hourly rate is the same as last year. The rate can range from $115 an hour to $72 a hour, depending on the type of work performed.
