Wawasee’s Griner Wins Sectional; Warrior Teams Advance

DUNLAP – Led by Luke Griner’s first-place finish, Wawasee’s cross country teams advanced to regional competition by virtue of the boys’ third-place finish and the Lady Warriors finishing fifth at the Elkhart Central Sectional at Ox Bow Park Saturday.

The Warrior boys lost a tiebreaker with Elkhart Memorial, each at 91 points and 11 points behind champion Northridge. Northridge also won the girls title with 51 points. The Lady Warriors finished with 135 points.

Griner covered the course in 16:39, about nine seconds faster than runner-up Luke Owings of Concord. Spencer Hare was sixth for Wawasee, Michael Hammer 16th, Bennett Hoffert 29th and Thomas Conley 39th. Ricardo Romo was 42nd and Jace Alexander 46th for the Warriors.

The Lady Warriors were paced by McKenzie Smith’s 12th-place finish in 21:21. Caitlin Wortinger was 17th, Aubrey Kuhn 30th, Autumn Turner 32nd, Ella Beezley 44th, Reagan Atwood 47th and Valeria Pizana 48th for Wawasee.

Lakeland Christian didn’t field a full team. Trenton Parker and San Turner finished 75th and 76th, respectively, in the boys race.

The Wawasee squads will run in the Elkhart Central Regional at Ox Bow Park, with the girls race at 10:30 a.m. and the boys race following around 11:15.

Warriors Fall In Boys Soccer Sectional Final

SYRACUSE – Wawasee’s Chris Pena scored the first goal of the 2A Wawasee Sectional boys soccer title match Saturday, but Garrett won the title 3-1 Saturday at Warrior Field.

Ian Lambright assisted on the Pena goal.

Wawasee finished its season with a 7-8-3 record.
