Warsaw's Rout Of Two NLC Opponents Leads Roundup

The eighth-ranked Warsaw boys track and field team didn’t get pushed too much in a three-team, Northern Lakes Conference meet at the Tigers Athletic Complex Thursday night.
Hosting Plymouth and Concord, Warsaw picked up a 98-34 win over the Pilgrims and took down the Minutemen by a count of 102-30.
In relay events, Warsaw’s 3200 relay of junior Ismael Calderon, sophomore Daniel Messenger, sophomore Michael Compton and junior Tyler Houvener won in 8:51.24 and its 400 relay of senior Wyatt Jones, senior Nathan Kolbe, junior Gabe Furnivall and junior Tristan McClone finished first with a time of 44.17.
Individually, first-place finishes for the Tigers were accomplished by Jones (100, 11.35), senior Jacob Poyner (1600, 4:42.29), junior Ryan Goon (300 hurdles, 41.83), Calderon (800, 2:04.27), Nathan Kolbe (200, 23.37), Robert Murphy (3200, 10:21.23), Stephen Kolbe (high jump, 6-2) and Jeffery Coulter (pole vault, 11-6).
The two wins improved the Tigers to 5-0 in the conference, with only one NLC meet remaining, which will be Wednesday at Elkhart Memorial and includes Goshen.
Before that, Warsaw will host its annual Max Truex Invitational tonight, beginning at 6 p.m.

Thursday in Syracuse
The Wawasee boys track and field team ran its last home meet Thursday night, losing to Northridge (76-56) and Elkhart Memorial (71-61), falling to 2-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference. In the meet, Wawasee did receive first-place finishes from J.J. Gilmer in the high jump (6-0) and long jump (20-0.5), Ethan Brown in the discus (142-0) and Chad Eppley, who won the shot put with a distance of 44-10.5. The Warriors will be at Saturday’s John Reed Relays at East Noble High School.

Thursday in South Whitley
In Three Rivers Conference competition Thursday night, the Whitko boys track and field team dominated Wabash, 90-42, in South Whitley. Individually, Connor Stouder won the 100 (11.4), 200 (23.8) and 400 (53.8), while also anchoring the Wildcats’ winner 1600 relay of Kuyler Bailey, Derek Miller and Tyler Sherwin (3:42.2). Sherwin also posted two first-place victories (800, 1600), as did Tyler Sherwin (300 hurdles, discus). The Wildcats are off until the Kelly Relays on May 3 at Concord High School.

The Warsaw baseball team made a late surge, but Northridge held on for a 6-5 Northern Lakes Conference win in Middlebury Thursday night. Warsaw fell behind 6-1 after three innings, but scored two in the fourth and another two in the seventh, but came up short. Shay Hepler and Caleb Moneyheffer each had two hits, with both recording a double. Warsaw hosts Concord today in another NLC contest.

Thursday in South Whitley
At home against Southwood Thursday, the Whitko baseball team won its Three Rivers Conference opener 1-0. The Wildcats scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning, but senior pitcher Alex Stoddard made it hold up, pitching a complete game, striking out 13 and allowing just two hits. Whitko now sits at 1-0 in the TRC improved the squad to 9-4 overall. Up next for the Wildcats is Saturday’s doubleheader at Southern Wells, beginning at 10 a.m.

Wawasee’s Luke Jackson was the medalist with a 34, while Whitko’s low score was Cole Bechtold’s 41 and Manchester was led by Connor Eichenauer’s 44.
