Warsaw, Whitko Win Turtle Town Titles In Roundup

The Warsaw and Whitko girls track and field teams each claimed championships at Saturday’s Turtle Town Classic at Churubusco High School.
The Warsaw Lady Tigers defended their 2012 title in the Gold Division, while the Whitko Lady Wildcats won the Black Division after finishing second a year ago.
For Warsaw, which still without defending 3200-meter state champion Ashley Erba, its 400 relay of Mariah Harter, Samantha Alexander, Brittney Rhodes and Ann Harvuot finished first in 51.43 seconds and its 3200 relay of Brooke Rhodes, Cynthia Yoder, Madeline Hooks and Hannah Dawson also finished first, in a time of 10:15.75.
Individually, Sarah Ray won the 3200 (11:27.49) and was second in the 1600 (5:18.83).
Claire Hickerson (pole vault), Jackie Ferguson (300 hurdles) and Harvuot (100, 200) all claimed second-place finishes.
Whitko’s Miranda Terrill was a first-place finisher in the high jump, clearing 5-foot-1, while Josie Sparks had a second-place finish in the 400 (1:04.38).
Wawasee also competed with Warsaw in the Gold Division, finishing 10th and Manchester was seventh in the Black Division.
The 3-0 Lady Tigers join Elkhart Memorial for a three-team Northern Lakes Conference meet at Concord Tuesday.
Whitko will host Lakeland Christian Academy, Manchester and Northfield Tuesday.

Saturday in Howe
The Lakeland Christian Academy girls track and field team finished second out of four teams at Saturday's Tingley Invitational at Howe School. Elkhart Christian Academy won the meet with 162 points, while LCA had 94. At the meet, Hailey Nieveen won the 100 hurdles (17.1) and 300 hurdles (56.0), while also leading off the first-place 1600 relay with Hannah Remington, Carissa Urschalitz and Emilee Catron. The Lady Cougars will be at Whitko Tuesday.

The Whitko baseball team fell in five innings at home Saturday, losing 11-0 to Norwell. Wyatt Wolf posted Whitko’s only hit against Norwell’s Luke Hunter. The 7-4 Wildcats host New Haven today at 5 p.m.

Saturday in North Manchester
The Manchester baseball team was hit with a pair of losses Saturday at home against Churubusco. In the doubleheader, the Eagles won the first game 13-9, then claimed the second 5-2. In the Game 1 loss, Justin Lewis, Cody Harlan, Jim Sainsbury and Jurgin Cripe each had two hits, while Phoenix Goad posted two hits in Game 2. The 0-5 Squires host Columbia City today then welcome in North Miami Wednesday.

BOYS GOLF
Saturday in Franklin
For the second time this season, the second-ranked Warsaw boys golf team came just short of knocking off top-ranked Columbus North. The squads met on April 6 in Peru for the Hall of Fame Invitational, with Columbus North winning with a 310, followed by Warsaw’s 312. At Saturday’s Spring Preview at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Columbus North shot a 307 and Warsaw was second with a 308. Triton was also in the loaded field, shooting a 350, finishing 16th. Individually, Columbus North’s Mike VanDeventer won with a two-under 70, followed by Warsaw’s Jonny Hollar (71) and Jon Schram (72) in second and third, respectively. Warsaw hosts Triton Tuesday at Stonehenge Golf Club.
