Warsaw, Wawasee Girls Golf Teams Lead Local Roundup

ELKHART — With Wawasee coming out on top of Thursday’s three-team, Northern Lakes Conference match at Elkhart’s Bent Oak Golf Club, it earned a second-place tie in the conference regular season.
Wawasee finished its round with a 186, followed by Warsaw’s 188 and host Concord’s 218.
Based on Wawasee and Warsaw’s scores, both finished 5-2 in the NLC, good for second place behind NorthWood’s 7-0 mark.
Wawasee was paced by freshman Aubrey Schmeltz’s 45, while sophomore Mikala Mawhorter, junior Elizabeth Jackson and sophomore Kylee Rostochak each shot a 47. Sophomore Courtney McDaniel was the Lady Warriors’ fifth-player score with a 60.
For Warsaw, junior Alexis Manwaring was the medalist with a 40, followed by senior Nikki LaLonde’s 43, senior Elizabeth Meadows’ 48, junior Kristen Watson’s 57 and sophomore Aarshia Jain’s 63.
Warsaw and Wawasee will need to finish better than NorthWood at the NLC Championships on Sept. 14 at Goshen’s Maplecrest Golf Club if they hope to stake a claim in the conference championship.
Before the conference meet, Wawasee will take part in Saturday’s Culver Girls Academy Invitational at Plymouth’s Swan Lake Resort and Warsaw travels to Culver’s Mystic Hills Golf Course Monday to take on the CGA.

Canterbury’s Jessica Harrison was the medalist with a 44 on the par-36 course and Whitko was led by April Bishop’s 46. The Lady Wildcats travel to face Southwood Tuesday.

Taking on the Huntington North Lady Vikings and Southwood Lady Knights at LaFontaine Golf Club Thursday, the Tippecanoe Valley girls golf team lost against both. Huntington North shot a 187 on its home course, three shots ahead of Southwood’s 190 and Tippecanoe Valley finished with a 222. Huntington North’s Maddi Kennedy was the medalist with a 39 on par-36 course. For Valley, Victoria Biddle’s 47 was its low score. Up next for Valley is Saturday’s Culver Girls Academy Invitational at Plymouth’s Swan Lake Resort’s Silver Course.

The Warsaw boys tennis team cleared its first big hurdle in defending its Northern Lakes Conference championship Thursday in Plymouth. Taking a nine-match NLC win streak into Plymouth, the Warsaw Tigers won 3-2, improving their conference record to 3-0, while Plymouth falls to 1-1. Getting the victory, the Tigers dominated on the singles courts. On the No. 1 court, Warsaw junior Sam Rice won 6-3, 6-1, senior Will Petro won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and senior Evan Miller was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 3. The 6-2 Tigers host Crown Point Saturday at 11 a.m.
