In what was an instant classic to begin the season, the Warsaw football team answered the call in their opening night game against Fort Wayne Snider Friday night, winning 38-30 in a game that featured five lead changes and a tie.
The game’s final touchdown would be the one that decided it, as a 5-yard Brody Duncan run into the end zone with 1:39 left on the clock broke a 30-30 tie and put the Tigers in front for good. A two-point conversion by Tucker Reed gave the game its final score.
Warsaw had to battle back in this one, trailing 10-0 in the opening minutes of the game. The Tigers got onto the board with 90 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 37-yard run by Michael Schenck. Just minutes later, a 23-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Ty Martin put Warsaw in front for the first time.
They’d stay in front at the break thanks to a 76-yard score by Wyatt Harman with three minutes left in the half after a Snider touchdown gave the home team the lead just a minute earlier.
Schenck continued his already big night in the second half with two more touchdowns, one of 27 yards and the other a 7-yard carry. The second of which gave his team an eight-point lead with eight minutes to go. Snider tied things up with four minutes left before the run by Duncan iced the game.
The Tigers certainly felt the loss of former kicker Mason Smythe in this one. With the once four-year legsmith now graduated, kicking was a nightmare for the visitors on Friday night. The team missed all five PATs it attempted.
Warsaw ran for 462 yards in the win at an astounding 9.8 yards per carry. Schenk led the way with 134 yards, while Harman also cracked the century mark with 114. Brody Duncan had 57 while Tucker Reed had 53.
Warsaw (1-0) will play its home opener Friday night against Warren Central.
