Warsaw Kickers Draw With Dragons

Posted
ARGOS – The scoreboard at Eugene Snyder Field showed a 1-1 tie.

To Warsaw Tigers coach Frank Courtois, however, it felt more like a loss.

In a high school boys soccer match against the Argos Dragons, a matchup of teams that won sectional titles last year, Warsaw dominated the hosts in terms of chances to score.

The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute of the 80-minute match when junior Jorge Rico scored on an assist from classmate Blake Burns, outshot Argos 9-2 and had five corner kicks to the Dragons’ one.

Courtois, whose team opened the season last week with a 2-0 win over the Carroll Chargers, liked the way his team put together opportunities to score, but was disappointed to only come away with one goal, as well the one it gave up to Argos off a free kick in the 69th minute.

“I was just telling the boys, Jorge had at least two goals that he could have put away, all he had to do was square his body and put them away,” said Courtois.

“Garrett (Reinholt) had a couple chances. Blake had a couple chances. We couldn’t finish tonight. There’s games like that ... even if they didn’t have a goalie we probably couldn’t put anything in the net.”

As the game wore on, it appeared it was only a matter of time before the Tigers scored. And when they got their goal and put the Dragons on their heels even more, there was a feeling of Warsaw really being in control at that point.

Argos, however, found the equalizer just four minutes later, capitalizing on the free kick that senior Lukas VanDerWeele put in play and junior Chino Roque placed in the back of the net.

“I go into every game expecting to win, but against a team like Warsaw, who was good last year and has improved since we played them last year, of course we have too, but I would say they’re easily a top 10 team in 3A,” said Argos coach Todd VanDerWeele.

“They may not be ranked that high officially, but they’re solid. They’re so good. I’m happy that my boys were able to take that lump of giving up that goal and not getting down, and to get the equalizer and continue to fight to at least get something out of it.”

Argos’ Colton Markley made eight saves in goal, while Warsaw’s Harrison Mevis had one save.

In JV?action, Warsaw beat Argos 4-1.

The Tigers are in action again Tuesday when they host Fort Wayne Northrop.
