I just got done reading the Tuesday edition of the Times-Union and felt compelled to write this letter.
I cannot believe that in this day and age where there are children coming up missing all the time, and it is so easy to board a plane and be half way around the world before the proper steps have been taken to notify the proper authorities, that there is someone that has the audacity to complain about the Amber Alert System. Wake up. We do not live on the picket-fence-lined streets of Mayberry.
The individual says that they couldn't help. Wouldn't it be helpful if they heard the Amber Alert, as well as the description of the girl, and by some chance saw the girl and alerted the local authorities and the girl ended up back at home with her parents? I think that would be one circumstance of being helpful.
But maybe we all should have this attitude about the Amber Alert System. Then when a child in their family goes missing, we can all ignore it because we resent being disturbed by their problems - after all, we didn't create them right? Or better yet, you could only turn your weather box on when there is a chance for dangerous weather conditions, such as tornado warnings, watches, severe thunderstorms, warnings, watches, etc.
As a mother of a 21-month-old, I cannot imagine having someone take my child. I would want to get her description out to as many people as possible as fast as possible to help expedite her return. But, I guess until something tragic like having a child abducted hits home, then the skeptics of the Amber Alert System will remain just that.
