NORTH MANCHESTER - W. Dwight Smith, 81, of North Manchester, died at 2:45 p.m. Dec. 14, 2009, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born Feb. 8, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., to William Harlan and Frances Sheller Smith. On June 3, 1951, he married Janice Hoff, who survives.

He was a Church of the Brethren pastor for nine years and pastor at Pine Creek (Ill.) Disciples of Christ Church, for six years. He was a junior high school teacher of literature and language arts in Dixon, Ill., for 22 years. He graduated from Manchester College in 1950. He was past president of Rock River (Ill.) Division of NEA. He was a member of the "Sea-going Cowboys" with Heifer Project International.

Also surviving are a son, Jeff (and spouse Maureen) Smith, North Manchester; a brother, E. Stanley (and spouse Jean) Smith, North Manchester; four sisters, Pauline Delk, Dorothy (and spouse Jim) Mason and Shirley (and spouse Jim) Mishler, all of North Manchester, and Maureen Weaver, Tucson, Ariz.; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor Kurt Borgmann officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is one hour prior to the service Sunday at Timbercrest.

McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, is in charge of arrangements.
