Retha Hicks personifies the term "public servant". She qualifies as a "public" servant because in her role as Winona Lake clerk-treasurer she each and every day strives to work for the public good.
I have known many public employees over the years. In my role as an educator at Warsaw Community High School for 33 years, I have known few public employees that impress me like Retha. She arrives at work each day to see what good can be done for the people of Winona Lake. She is truly selfless and devoted to serving the community in which she lives.
The second qualifier that makes her a terrific public servant is that she truly is a servant at heart. Whether she is riding in the back of a truck delivering recycling containers to Winona Lake residents, or planning the award-winning art work along the Greenway, she strives to serve. Her goal is to improve the community through her servant leadership.
Retha has served as clerk-treasurer for the Town of Winona Lake for 18 years. She is a leader on both the local and state level, serving as president of the State of Indiana League of Municipal Clerk Treasurers. She is sought out on a regular basis to provide her insight to other leaders of small communities around the State of Indiana.
A pioneer in recycling on the local level, she introduced curbside recycling in Winona Lake years before Warsaw instituted such a community friendly service. I have observed her handle difficult residents with professionalism and aplomb while keeping the focus on the issues at hand rather than on the personalities involved.
All in all she is "practically perfect in every way" to serve as Winona Lake clerk-treasurer. Please join me in voting for her in the primary election this May.
